Best economy comes when you run your engine at best efficiency for as much of the journey as possible. That's what hybrids do - either run the engine and make full use of it to drive car and charge battery, or switch it off and run on electrics. Combined with the light foot of a ballet dancer on the brakes - which just convert fuel generated kinetic energy to heat and dump it to the atmosphere.Smartbear said:NickDE said:Internal combustion engines get best efficiency at about 2/3 of max power. So either give plenty of gas or come off the gas completely - the pulse and glide method. And avoid braking as much as possible. One hell of a lot more fun than the 'don't accelerate and drive everywhere in top gear' method. If you're scared of acceleration buy a 1 litre Fiesta.Paulr said:What got me was that driving quicker and (seemingly) less economically, I got more MPG!
Best efficiency is very different from best economy, max mpg is usually attained when the foresight & vision of an eagle is combined with the light foot of a ballet dancer![]()

If you want to drive using only a fraction of the capability of the engine, buy a smaller engine in the first place. Maybe a four pot E89
