GM5 removal

Hi all,

I am trying to remove the GM5 unit from my E85 Z4 as the central locking has developed a fault. From watching some videos on youtube, it looks as though you only need to remove the 2 phillips screws holding the panel below the glovebox in place, and the panel just drops down revealing the GM5... However I am having real difficulty in removing this panel as it seems to be catching on something. I have managed to wriggle enough room to lock behind the panel and it looks like the GM5 is not actually located here at all?? I have tried removing the whole glovebox, but again to no avail... I can remove four phillips screws, but it looks like there is a fifth just behind the glovebox hinge which I can't get to.

If anybody else has had a similar experience, I would be most grateful if you could share your wisdom!!

Many thanks

No need to remove teh glovebox for teh GM5 module to be revealed. You were right initially in assuming that you would only have to remove the two screws and the panel will come down.

The GM5 module is the white box of which the lower left corner is shown in this pic:

Coudl it be that your pannel is simply stuck at the plastic of the center console or the dashboard?

In facelift cars, in addition to the two Phillips screws, there's a plastic support strap coming through the centre vent opening. Remove the expansion rivet fastening the strap to the bottom panel by pulling out the little centre button headed pin about 1 cm and then the entire rivet can be removed. Once the panel is lowered, either disconnect or remove the footwell lamp to avoid straining the wiring. The GM5 module is easily detached once the panel is lowered.

Thanks for the help. It was the rivet in the footwell vent that was causing frustration! However, the GM5 was actually located up behind the glovebox on a metal bracket. This seems to be different to what Mau has shown and from what I have seen elsewhere?

Hmm, interesting. At least up through my build of May 2006 they've all been screwed to the lower kick panel. What year do you have?
