GM5 Questions

Hello

I have had problems with my drivers window not going up (all other functions work) - see https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=141266, So I have identified the problem as no voltage to the pin when pressing up button which I am thinking must be due to the GM5 module. The only thing is, most problems around GM5 seem to relate to central locking and indeed I had mine repaired for that a few years ago.

So a few questions where hopefully someone can help
1) Does anyone know of companies who repair them other than for central locking relays? Cartronics seem to but couldn't say if the fix would work and want £200 + vat to repair the window relays (assuming that is the problem)
2) Has anyone bought a replacement unit? If so, what coding if any is needed? I presume the keys would need to be recoded - but is that all? Articles on forum seem undecided.
BMW dealer tells me they no longer make them new.
3) If people have replaced have they done it with later units (my Z is 2003) - has that worked OK?
4) Does anyone know which wires going into the GM5 would equate to the drivers door up switch? It would be good if possible to test that before I get too far down the route.

All help greatly appreciated.

Regards
Steve

I'd start by suspecting the switch. They're membrane jobs (like TV remotes etc) so prone to getting muck under the rubber and preventing good contact. Dismantle the switch and bridge the PCB pads to test.

Thanks. Have cleaned switch and checked with another switch - same problem. Hence thinking it is GM5.

Yes - tried direct feed to motor. Motor works OK. Tested signal on cable - there is zero voltage coming when press up button. 12-14v when press down button.

ECU testing can repair them
Various places can for around £40-45.
Unless you have a Star 12 Low, in which case less places take them on and it's about £60-70.
Or you can fit another one. You'll need to match your keys to it and if you have any fancy coding on yours you'll lose that.
As previously discussed though, with your strange issue, it could be worth borrowing one to check if it is that first.

Just to round this thread off - the issue was indeed to to with the GM5 module. There are limited places that will fix the window relays (loads that fix the central locking relays) and I was being quoted around £200 to fix.

I fitted a replacement GM5 module (thanks @enuff_zed) and that has sorted the issue. No recoding was needed - but I did have to re-pair my keys.
