hi are there any members in cumbria that could help me remove my GM5? I dont have the technical ability to do it and I am having problems with wipers and central locking. I was looking at a GM5 repair service in Surrey as there doesn't appear to be one up north! thanks a lot for your help

I'm too far away to help, but when you get it out check the label. It will be a '5RD' or a 'Star 12 Low'. Not every repair place does the Star 12.

thanks my car is a 2004 3.0i so I am guessing its a 5RD - i could ask BMW in Carlisle to remove it but I am worried they will charge a bomb to do it! Appreciate the message

It is pretty easy to do yourself if you can get into the passenger footwell. First remove the lower trim panel beneath the glovebox. It's up behind the glovebox, mounted on a metal bracket. Simplest way is to undo the two plastic nuts holding the bracket and lower the whole lot into the footwell so you can see how the plugs come off.
Then remove the bracket before you send it off.

Go onto Ebay and search GM5 repair, then select the ad by a seller called autoelectron. They're based in Harrogate and have easy to follow instructions on removing the unit, or they also offer a same day drive in drive out repair service for a reasonably cheap price.
They repaired mine via the postal service a couple of years ago and everything has been fine since then

I didn't know they did a drive in service. That's a great option.

Further to my previous post, got home tried the key reset procedure again. It would lock the car as I was sitting in it but I couldn’t unlock my drivers door - even when pulling the handle from the inside or reaching over and trying it from the outside handle. The unlock / lock button in the centre won’t work. Had to climb out via the passenger side as that door would open from the inside. When I got out I could lock the car from the key fob and the drivers side would open with the key. Really appreciate folks advice - does this sound like a GM5 issue? I have booked in at Harrogate for Saturday but after some reassurance I’m on the right track ! Thanks

Probably. Trouble is until you get that checked you won't know. Their ad does say they don't charge full price if there's nothing wrong.

What happens if you lock the car using the key rather than the buttons? Sounds more like a key fob battery problem to me?

Worth trying, but I don't think that would cause the centre locking button behind the gear lever not to work?

Do a quick search on the forum for earthing. I have seen a few posts aroung gremlins and GM5 issues. Im sure some I read some folk had issues with the common grounding points. Maybe worth a try before sending it away for repair.
