GM5 compatibility between models

Hello, I have a 2.5si (2006) that has started to fail when unlocking the driver door after letting it sit in the sun. With cold weather it works perfectly, so I suspect I have a defective relay on my GM5 module.

I've been thinking of buying a used one, code it and send mine to repair (and keep the used one as spare). I saw that there are modules that have less relays (usually coupes/convertibles as stated on bmwgm5.com). In our case, as we only have 2 doors, I think "all" of them should be compatible, even if they have more relays as they come from a sedan or touring

The question that I have is, as this module has been in all E46's, Z4 and even X3, are all of them compatible after coding?

Although, I've had my GM5 reworked because the locks were failing, I believe GM5 also controls the wipers and windows on a Z4. If I'm right about the windows, then there might be a difference in the Z4 module. In that, when you engage the convertible top both the drivers/passengers windows drop a little. Sometime, when convertible tops fail to function, I'll advise the person to reset the windows. Sometimes this works and other times it doesn't because the system has other issues. I can't tell you if the window drop order is given by the GM5 or simply sent to it by the convertible controller during the top-down process (white box behind the drivers seat US model).

It's my understanding that the only coding need for a GM5 is matching the Key's to the system. The other parts are plug and play.

However, your best source for this is the guy at bmwgm5.com, he's a good guy, simply email him and ask if module for other bmw's will work in a Z4

There are two types of GM5. 5RD and Star 12 Low. They are not interchangeable so you need to see which yours is first

Thanks for the answers, I will first check what I do have, and ask the guy at bmwgm5.com

I'll post his response here so if someone searches the same matter, he already gets the answer

Hello, I am posting this as I have it really fresh and might be helpful in the future for other members.

I failed (please continue reading) buying an E83/E46 latest model of GM5 (P/N 61353454607). Being a "high" module should be able to do everything, as ALL Z4's are "low". I decided to buy this one after seeing in NCS Dummy that the Z4 had a GM5.C05 as most updated GM5, and E46 and E83 had a C06 version. The reason was I thought that being the latest model it might have better relays, and also some other functions that ours might not have. This module in particular is HW 3.2 and SW 4.5, vs 2.1 and 4.1 that I have (61356963038)

After receiving it, I installed it and some of the things did not work (expected, needed to code). The problem was that I opened NCS Expert, tried to read the module and it said that the version expected was different from the one it read (normal), I copied the Daten files from E83 to the E85 folder. Then, it could be read, but when opening in NCS Dummy, it would not accept modifying any values, as it said that there was an "unknown function keyboard (08C8)".

I also tried the option of "being" an E83/E46, but it said that the version of the module/car had a mismatch, so it wasn't either possible to recode anything.

So in the end, it's been a complete failure, I will ask if it's possible to send it back for a refund. I will try and E46 module as they're cheaper with the highest version of HW/SW available in a Z4. I will post back the results in case it's interesting to anybody
