Glue on the dash

Why is it that people insist on sticking things on a dash. I assumed that the previous owner of my Z4 had seen fit to attach their sat nav to the dash, using one of those sticky pads, but I have tried to remove the residue using white spirit to no avail. I tested the white spirit first, so no problem there, but it has had no affect on the residue so now I am wondering what the hell they have used. Has anybody on here got any ideas what else I can try, I did try sticky stuff remover but to no avail.

Whatever it was they had on the dash, it has also managed to lift the fabric from the dash. First I will have to remove the glue, then I will have to see how I can get it stuck down again. It never ends
 
I will give the peanut stuff a try, if that or the heat doesn't work I am at a loss. The material hasn't split, it has just lifted from whatever it fastens to on the dash.
 
Have you tried WD 40 it's pretty good at removing tar spots of bodywork so it maybe worth giving it a try :thumbsup:
 
Heat it up and warm soapy water mechanical rubbing should get it up.

At an extreme push acetone (nail polish remover)will shift it but is likely damage your dash if your not extremely careful. Ethanol would be better. Use it on a cloth and try to dab just the sticky bit sparingly.

I'm always removing sticky tape from polycarbonate in the lab using ethanol or azowipes

he just said hes put white spirit on it already haha, i think nail polish damaging it is the least of his worries

probably best you dont use acetone on the dash though, that stuff eats plastic.
 
There is a glue remover spray by wurth if am not mistaken. Mind you if it's epoxy or resin type you won't remove it.

yeah, its pretty harsh, if i have to use it i tend to get it on some cotton wool thats wrapped on something. ethanol is much better for it. love the smell of it tho... nothing better than cracking open a fresh drum of acetone :) lol

mechanical action should get most off and then soapy water the rest.
 
If you know anyone who has a waterless cleaner a bit like that grease lightening stuff they sell on the shopping channels, that removes all sticky stuff like that and works a treat on tar.

I only know that stuff works cause I tried it to remove a sticky pad from the top of my folks TV only to find my mum had stuck it there to stop the photo frame falling off when the dog knocked against the stand. Oops! Worked a treat though!

Also used it on a neighbours car when someone nicked the badges and left the sticky padding on the paint work. Worked better than using his key!
 
Sounds like a horrible mess. Just like folks who used to drill holes in facias to mount phones....

Unless you really test all these solvent ideas out on a hidden area you're almost certain to trash the dash and end up buying a new or covering it.

I like petrol as an adhesive solvent, but has to be tested.

To glue it back I suggest a needle and syringe and get some thin adhesive behind the surface.

I've literally just done the exact same job on my car this weekend. Luckily mine hasn't lifted the dash covering though. In the end I got the sat nav mount off with a combination of heat from a hairdryer and the use of a flat dash trim remover tool. I got rid of the excess gunk with "Goo Gone" and then cleaned the dash with Auto Glum vinyl and rubber cleaner. Loctite and Evostik both do glue releasers/removers which might help?
