Glove box

I'm not sure if my glove box is breaking or if it's normal.

If I shut it firmly it half locks and seems to fall open.

If I slam it semi hard upwards it locks fine.

Is this a borked catch? And is it easy/cheap to fix?

Mine did something similar, and if I put any left/right direction on the closing action it would not catch.

Ultimately my problem was down to a broken 'hinge' on the RHS rear of the glovebox. The 'hinge' is actually a brass collar inside a plastic housing, and the housing is not that strong, so when it cracks breaks, it means the glovebox does not close in a straight path and this stops it from hitting the catch square.

Is taking it apart easy for a noob? Or should I probably not bother? It's something I can probably live with!

(thanks for the reply!)

Taking it apart is easy, just press in these two tabs and the whole front will fall down, and then you can see the 'hinges' at the rear to see if they're broken or not.

Putting it back is simply a case of closing it as normal.

However if you need to remove it completely to fix something you may find putting it back in is more awkward, as there's a 'pin' that slides into place on the LHS to hold the whole thing in place.

It took me about 10 attempts of thinking I had it sorted, and the glovebox falling out after a couple of minute's driving, to realise what was going wrong.

I did have a BMW technical instruction sheet explaining it, but the website that hosted these is now down.

I replaced my glovebox when i first got my car as the hinge with the brass ring was cracked... New glovebox was £90 from Soper and took 30mins to swap out.

I glued mine back together and put a cable tie around it to help it stay on while it was setting.

Think the cable tie is still on there too!

I didnt think of that... I used a rubberband which lasted 5 minutes!! And then claimed the cost of new glovebox off the dealer who sold me the car (i saved them a fitting cost!)
