Glove box door damper

At least I think that's what it is?
First small niggle to sort on Val's E85. When I open the glove box there is a plastic 'piston' that drops down on the right-hand side.
Above it there seems to be the female portion so I'm guessing it is some kind of damper for the door?
The two parts are to long to push back together with the door open, and I'm not willing to force the door down any further.
So my question is two-fold:
Firstly, is there an easy way to lower just the door sufficiently to engage the 'piston' part back inside the outer cylinder part.
Secondly, apart from tidying it up, will this be likely to work or are any bits likely to have disappeared?
Tbh, if it just makes it look neater I'll be happy.

There are two tabs on the ceiling of the glovebox that can be pushed in to drop the door all the way down (this is also how you access the fuse box). The damper is normally disconnected where it joins the door by pushing in two wings. Sounds like the mechanism has broken in the middle of yours, perhaps when someone did not disconnect the damper from the door and simply pulled the door wide open to access the fuses?

Mine's been knackered since I got mine.
Doesn't bother me that much.
Just means me shades fly out if I'm not quick enough when opening the cubby.

So basically it looks like I can move the door down to put it all back together but it won't actually damp, just look a bit tidier?
