Getting to know the ///M . . . .

Things have been quiet as the ///M is under the new cover and it's been raining for days!

Hope to have the ///M (and the 3.0si) out tomorrow so will keep posting.

Really been interested in everyone's comments and feedback - excellent - thanks for posting :thumbsup:
 
if the 3.0si drives like my 130imsport hands down id take that for the DD / fun daily, i loved that car and had to date one of my best drives in it....... the engine was just incredible. i enjoyed this as much as the z4 but in a completely different way.

The z4m is a beast in comparison, the engine no longer is butter smooth its like a chainsaw, everything is turned up, its not a relaxing settle down comfy drive, but it was never meant to be. For me this car is best enjoyed as a weekend toy, daily sadly i think it would wear thin on me... but i could be wrong, but then i am getting older now, our desires from our cars change as we get older.

absolutely... as said.... their are instances where my ///M just makes me feel like I've won the lottery, like pinch myself is this real... I've said it before...

warm summers evening, sun setting , long country back road, wide but twisty enough i need to think about what I'm doing, roof off, music on, supercharging whistling and popping off, exhaust blaring , the s54 making that noise it makes , the tyres gripping with everything they've got, the tinge of brake pad in the air, the way the car darts from corner to corner , The Diff hooking up the rear tyres fighting against the power, the detail through the steering wheel.... THATS where the ///M just feels magical.

SADLY how often do those moments arise on the DD???

I'm the same, 40 next year, gulp! I ran a Caterham for 7 years, but towards the end the novelty had worn off and whilst i enjoy driving friends Caterham on track I'm not fussed about getting another one. The Z4M is as much fun, completely different but I love it. Comfortable enough to be driven daily and for holidays but I prefer my 325ti for the commute unless the weather is hot. :)
 
Well we've had an interesting day today . . . .

Took the ///M to my specialist independent Scott to talk through my issues (he had my 3.0si in for maintenance and knows it well). He'd previously asked me how I was getting on with the ///M and talking it through with him really helped to change my view (nothing new really - just what has been said on the forum but it was reassuring to be able to talk directly and get the same response). Then I took it to my mate who services all my other cars for the last 30 years. He too was so impressed and confident about the ///M, encouraging me to just enjoy the experience.
It's funny how your attitude can change (it started with Cherrym's visit and a drive out with him end of last week). This was all reassuring and it's ridiculous that other's comments help in a case like this but I can only say how I felt and it brought a smile and a nod and added to my confidence to properly use the ///M.

The rain had stopped so Steph and I took the ///M out on our favoured back roads - but now, with a different attitude. Steph says it's the first time I've been relaxed and driving as I normally do. She sensed that I was now enjoying what was on offer rather than worrying about it - my more natural driving style allowing me to use the ///M as I felt necessary rather than driving around it's engine.

I reckon that mid speeds were up 10mph between bends which are dispatched in a way that has surprisingly changed the nature of our favourite roads. In fact, in some places I didn't recognise the roads, I couldn't register where we were, the ///M was so different from the 3.0si that some of the bends and straights felt changed - a little confusing, like a different road in places. Again sounds ridiculous but there was more than once I was amazed where we were as I concentrated on the driving - definitely a new stage of our relationship. . . .

 
I would never want my M as a DD but as a weekend toy it's fantastic. To be fair I thought the same about my old 3.0. The M is head and shoulders above the 3.0. The extra 100 BHP absolutely transforms the car for the better.

Just enjoy the M for what it is......an angry wasp with a cattle prod up its arse.!!
 
I have always said that the M is more than just a few HP more, and 5.x to 60 instead of 5.y seconds. It is not just about the outright speed, it is about the experience and sum of all components.

The 3.0 I had was fine as well, but the experience of the M was so much more than just a few .01s of a second of acceleration times.

The step from the M to the 911 was again not a performance step in an out and out straight line sense, again a different experience (more comfort for starters :lol: )

Paul has the 3litre si so it's not 100bhp different, it's 262 against 340ish Plus don't forget that surprisingly bmw made the M car heavier which counts against its power to weight ratio compared to the lighter 3litre car.

Not really surprising regarding the weight, the engine is heavier, steering is proper hydraulic rather than (one of the biggest letdowns for me on the non M's) electric, LSD, that extra exhaust weighs a fair bit.
As Yorkie said, regardless of the actual BHP difference, it does transform the car, the 3.0si is more 'linear' and sensible to me whereas the M is like an exploding bullet that doesn't stop whizzing you down the road. DD though? Not for me!
 
Mines a DD, though I don't actually DD it anymore. - I just don't have a third car so use mine when I need to. It's more fun now I don't drive it every day, and I agree with what everyone above says - it's not about how fast you can go (or lose your licence), it's the manner in which you get there. The whole experience is just on another level compared to my 3.0Si of old.

Not bad tho, hmmmmm which shall we take out today dear, the M or the old Si, :D
