Getting to 5th

OK,

Automatic Z4 3.0i ....... Speed run flat out. :evil: :driving:

After a mile the auto is still in 4th and I have to modulate the throttle to get it to find 5th.

Even in semi - manual mode it is not freely making the jump to top gear and light speed.

This delay makes it hard to reach the rated top speed before the need to BRAKE appears.

Any way to force this issue other than changing to a manual????
 
I had the same question.

SD mode I can shift 1,2,3,4 and then need to lift to get the car to shift to 5th.

I think you should just get some mud tires and use the whole runway. :wink: :fuelfire:
 
It is times like this I appreciate my manual transmission.
I would one day like to see mudders on a z4. I'd be laughing for weeks.
 
DrakeZZ, so where are your RPM's/speed at when it finally does change into 5th? I'm thinking if you're really into the throttle, that your tranny needs to maintain a higher gear in order to continue accelerating at the rate you're asking before being forced into 5th.
 
I'm not familar with the auto trannys, what are the rpm shift points during spirited driving? Does it rev to the redline in each gear?
 
The ECU continously learns your driving habits. If you drive the car hard for a short while, the ECU adjusts the shifting points and leaves the car in lower gears longer. Same thing with the electronic throttle sensitivity.

Ummm, at 140+ your not really looking around much or checking the radio for the best reception.
I was using all my dollar in being smooth and figuring out my braking marker so I would not be a farmer...

MY Driving habits, ??

If the ECU learns them and the DMV finds out then they might pull my DL for the next 20 years.

I need to let the wife drive the car more to offset those habits.

But i thought that gets ingnored when it senses that the pedal is to the metal

Am I missing something, obvious? If you were in DS and needed to shift to 5th, why not pull back on the Shifter? Operate the car in manu-matic mode - M1thru M5

Not really sure which you said gets ignored when it senses the pedal is to the metal. Were you thinking about the sport button?

I wasn't talking about the sport button. Even on a Z4 without the sport button, if you've been driving your Z4 regularly (not hard) for a while, when you soft-reset the ECU, the car will almost always feel more responsive because the throttle sensitivity will be reset also.

Nope , did not work at max throttle. we tried to do that. Two of us M4 to M5 pull did nothing
 
Wow, news to me. But then I was never in that situation with my Z. (i.e. Top-speed runs) Now it makes me wonder if that is an issue with the software applicable to GM sourced 5- speed AT or just an issue with yours. Either way, Sorry, I don't have an answer.
 
Come to think about it. When I did the flat out run in Nevada, If you just stomp on it, the car shifts into 5 at 140. I still don't understand why in manuel shift mode ( SD ) why it is required to let off to get the steptronics to shift.
