Getting rid of the mucky rain/building dust

This may be a complete noddy question. I new to detailling, but it took the plunge and bought all the bits needed for the job t an extent. Now last Sunday I washed, clayed, polished and waxed. The car is looking a bit mucky again due to a nearby building site and mucky rain. If I washed (maguiars gold class shampoo and conditioner) and dried, would I need to polish and wax again?

Shouldn't be any need - Gold Class is a decent shampoo that shouldn't strip the wax. You might want to try removing as much of the dust as possible before any contact cleaning - pressure washer / snow foam / rinse

Excellent, so before I should get my karcher (I've got the vari lance) on a light rinse first then give it a quick wash with the shampoo, and then just dry. Out of intrest how often should I really re polish and re wax?

If you've got a karcher with detergent dispenser use that to do stage 2, but
- an initial blast with the PW should remove any loose dust
- ideally spray with something like snowfoam or even a shampoo/water mix in a spray bottle and leave it to dwell for 5-10mins or so to help loosen any sticky dust/debris
- another blast with the PW

This should ensure that you've removed as much as possible before any physical contact with the paint

As to how often you should polish/wax - the answer is 'it depends' You should reapply wax when the old application is starting to fade, how long this takes depends on where the car is kept, weather conditions, the wax used.... etc. Use your eyes and your common sense and you won't go far wrong

Remember you get the some from the polish not the wax, you only really need to polish to remove swirls etc. so you have to use your eyes to decide when it's time to strip the wax, clay and polish again.

Brilliant, thank you so much for your help. My karcher does have the dispenser at the bottom (k2.400), but I've never used it. So you saying I can put the shampoo in there? You lost me a bit talking about whatever stage 2 is? Lol :headbang:

Told you I was a noddy at this!

Did mine last week and it was covered with two weeks worth of the Saharan rain. Just gave it a thorough pressure wash to remove as much sand as possible then an extra gentle hand wash using twice the normal amount of shampoo. Using two bucket method and rinsing twice as often as usual (1/2 panel at a time). Came up lovely and wax still beading like crazy.
