Getting cold feet on E89!

Buy the best you can afford and enjoy driving it for a while. Then if you feel the need, do any changes that makes you happier.

If it makes you feel more comfortable, buy from a forum member where people will have loved the car and the history is known.

Personally, I had a 35is, 7 years of absolute joy, permanent smile on my face just looking at it with no changes necessary.

Life is short and we are here for a good time not a long time. Hope you get what you want and be able to enjoy the good weather with the top down.

Sound advice

Go for it and enjoy the summer.

I would suggest you buy a car soon and pay the premium that they attract at this time of year but enjoy the summer, or wait until the gloomy days begin, save some cash or get a higher spec and be ready for the springtime

Running any older car has financial risk. But good and preventative maintenance is the key.
My car is from 2009 and of course I wonder about the roof which to my knowledge has not had any repairs since new. When will it fail?
But as long as I can get the roof to close should it fail, I will deal with the issues then. Meanwhile, this car has brought much joy already.
The genuine specialness of the design inside and out and the wonderful engine. Every time I drive it - especially with the top down, the more I love the car. And I have had some expenses as I replaced the headlights to bring their performance back to new, and I replaced the cracked alloys 296 with the 18s which still look great and were unique to the car. New tyres non run flat were needed. But sometimes these things happen with older cars.

If you had my alternative - a Stag or a TR6, these would also have potential issues to fix. The Triumph 6 has major frailties with big end bearings, and the Stag - which like tge Z4- has unbeatable style inside and out, has a legion of issues with the engine and body unless it has been restored which could easily cost 25k to do.

So I would say buy a Z4. But accept that some things might go wrong but hopefully with a little warning, but that it will bring you great pleasure and a wonderful feel good factor.

Newer cars go wrong and the initial outlay and depreciation is more.

Ain't that a fact! My 2017 Golf needed new waterpump after just over a year of ownership which cost me a shocking 700€ yet my 2009 Z4 which I have had for 4 years now has had no real issues.
