Ok, so I've um'd, ah'd and generally deliberated on this. City Powder Coaters sounded like they'd do a good job, but they are 100 miles away, and if it ain't right, or I have problems later on...
Local place someone mentioned on here (Ashton Powder Coating) have quoted me £40 per wheel without splitting (what is the point) or the same if I split them, although they then can't remove/replace the tyres, which was an extra £10 a corner anyway. However, the "obsessive" in me still doesn't like the thought of someone else rebuilding my wheels, when I could do it myself. (sad I know, but that's me)
So... I am going to split them myself, after having the tyres removed by my local trusted fitter.
With this in mind, I thought I'd make sure the bolts will actually come out first. So tonight I removed and replaced, 4 at a time the bolts from the O/S/F wheel. I already had an M8 long spline tool, which was brand new. All 20 came out easily :trampoline:
Tapped the bit into the bolt with a lump hammer to give it a shock, and also clean the head. At this point I realised that the heads had prev been painted/powder coated
Cleaned up the heads and corrosion that was present in the middle of each, I presume where water has gotten between the mating surfaces.
Judging by the "sanded" bit on some of the bolts, the prev refurb has been a quick fix, prob just before the guy I bought it from purchased it, around 3yrs ago..
So I managed to get them all out and back in, blowing out the holes with the compressor, a good amount of dust came from each!
A spattering of copaslip on each, and back in. Torqued them to 40nm, and then to 45nm, which was a bit much for one of them.. I felt the thread give, so I've ordered an M7 x 1.0 helicoil kit.. I think I'll stick to just under 40nm unless anyone knows the recommended torque? I think the copaslip may have allowed the thread to give, whereas I'll be using threadlock when finally rebuilding.
I plan on removing and refitting the other 60 :x bolts later this week, so at least I know once I have the tyres off, I'll be able to split them.
Then it's off to the powder coaters for a strip, repair and coat, just need to make my mind up on colour choice now :!:
Oh, and I must order an M7 bottoming tap to clean the threads of powdercoat..
Will post as these progress..
Mike
