Getting 108's refurbed...

Had a quote from Smartwheels http://www.smartwheelrepairs.co.uk/ for a complete strip and refurb of my 108's, as they are the real low point on the car. Was thinking of "Shadow Chrome" as the car is Sterling Grey. They have come back to me with a quote of £440 inc VAT. Was wondering if anyone had used them and could comment on the quality of work? Also, they offered me the option of "Gunmetal" instead @ £360, and in their gallery, they happen to have a Sterling Grey Z with 108's in that colour... Any thoughts?

Was thinking of doing the calipers blue at same time, as well as painting hubs silver..

Gun metal looks good, but someone on here had a shadow chrome refurb and they looked amazing. £440 sounds steep - is that the going rate?

Not sure, that's why I asked, I appreciate there's a bit more work involved with 108's though..

Price seems a bit high but may be thats the going rate ! Had all mine done for around £260 by a local bodyshop - but did pay cash in hand - he did take all the bolts out first and sand blasted the insides - I'm not a fan of dark wheels personally except may be for a white car - I kept to the original silver but without the polished rims as it's hard to find anyone who can do this.

I paid £330 for powder coated stars in gunmetal grey and diamound cut outers last year.

Hmm, Diamond cut outers sound nice, any pics? May ask for a cash/disassemble them myself price..

Hi Mate,

I recently got a quote form Smart wheels in silver and they quoted me £360 as you say. Suppose your paying the extra for the 'chrome'.....

Mine are in a dreadful condition so will be pursuing a refurb pretty soon. Let me know if you find a cheaper price and ill also do the same

The prices quoted don't seem too crazy imo , there's a lot of work involved & lots that can go wrong in the process.
My advice would be not to get involved splitting them yourself unless the price is significantly cheaper as this is most definitely where the time & effort is taken up
"olsonn" got himself a good deal it would seem  http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=85295

I split our summer 108s over the winter to get the rim powder coated as the spiders were in excellent condition. powder coating was £40 a rim The actual colour I chose was silver with fleck in it that jumps out in the sun. I didn't want to go down the diamond cut route as it rarely lasts more than a year in my experience (starts to cloud) even if you don't kerb them. I paid £40 to remove the tyres and £60 to put them back on and balance. This might be a bit steep but I use a guy I trust and he comes to my house and doesn't mark the wheels at all. I also didn't want exchange my wheels because I know there history from 6 months old and didn't want to end up with so repaired rims. So if it was another £40 for the spiders you would be looking at £420.
Splitting the wheels is not a job to take on lightly as it would be easy to scrap rim if the bolts round off and you don't successfully drill the bolts out.
Pic of wheels on the car.

Nice job although "spiders" is a new one on me  guessing you mean the stars or centres that you didn't need to have refurbed ? Unusual as they most commonly blister around valve & bolt heads :?

Stars or centres were in excellent condition but then thats prob due to them only being used in the summer.

I'd also be interested in this thread, looking to get mine refurbed but want to keep the OEM cut finish on the rim. Was looking at Lepsons? I think, was recommend on here but looking close to £900 for 108s, that was providing none were bent. Which was a bit too much for me, although I'm sure they'd do an excellent job.

Hi mate,

I still have the beautiful black 224s on my car that you sold me a while ago... Just looking to get my old 108s back in good condition as a nice second set, or maybe sell them on, who knows  :driving:
