I am very tempted to spend a couple of hundred quid (but no more) to give the M a bit of TLC that I'm not up to providing. But should I do it?

I have some nasty swirls, a couple of scratches and stone chips that I'd love to see the back of. The problem is I don't have a garage and the car is driven all year round, so is it throwing money down the drain? And would I be too scared to drive it/wash it afterwards?

Anyone had a similar experience or dilemma?

Do it! why not buy a cheap DA polisher?? i dont have a garage or an outside water supply but ive always managed with my DA and some decent products!

Just spent £800 on getting the new X5 treated, but at least it never needs doing again and the washing will be easy from now on :)

I would say go for it.
