Hi chaps,
I did a search here for posts about geo generally on a ///M so have done a bit of reading. I hope you all don't mind if I ask your collective advice. I already PM'd Exdos as he appears on most of those threads but I may not hear back in time (my fault, not his).
I am having new Eibach Pro springs and OEM top mounts tomorrow morning and then new tyres (Eagle F1 Asym 2) and a hunter alignment tomorrow afternoon - I have left this a bit late, hence posting on this forum. Springs/mounts at my indy in York; tyres/balance/alignment also in York but a new place to me - Indy doesn't have the necessary alignment equipment. I did ask whether they are OK to do geo settings and they are telling me they are well familiar with this type of work. New tyres are on the factory standard sizes - 225/45/18 front and 255/40/18 on the rear.
My driving is 100% road, no track use and I'm a sensible driver with no huge hooning sessions, more like the occasional burst and then calm again! Some long journies but a majority of shorter trips to friends, supermarkets etc. The expense of new suspension is too great at the moment and I find the standard suspension fine for me - so I'm not looking for recommendations on coilovers etc! I have the normal 18 inch 224s and am also happy, like their look and not looking to change them.
Car currently pulls slightly to the left but I've no idea what the current settings are re: geo. I understand this left-pull is not uncommon but it's still a bit of a concern - I suppose I'll see whether this is a symptom of poor alignment tomorrow when I see the "before" readings. The rears are quite worn on the insides but have plenty of tread on the outsides. I am unclear about when the tyres were last changed but mine is a low(ish) mileage car (25.5k) so it could be some time ago - at a guess, maybe two or more years ago.
So I'm looking for good tyre wear, esp on the rears and staighter rolling. Fronts are fine wear-wise currently across the tyre. Current tyres are contis, the factory M3 sizes.
Having read through a number of threads and therefore having seen some previous comments, do you think it would be sensible to have the following settings dialled in?:
front - negative 1.1 camber, zero toe in/out
rear - negative 0.9 camber, zero toe in/out
I think Exdos is recommending zero toe all round - sounds ok to me given wear concerns - with max neg camber rear and just over neg 1 at the front. My feeling is that this will be too extreme for me at the rear/I may not get any benefit from this, and I am already concerned about rear inside wear. I am asking the Indy to check the bushings when it's up on the ramp and a general poke around for peace of mind. Not sure what we will find. I do about 5k a year miles.
Any comments, general points would be helpful and thanks in advance.
