HI All,

So today i test drove a Mini cooper s, and a scirocco, both very nice, on a side note the sirocco is so popular new there is a 7 month waiting list for a new one and second hand you will spend more for a 6 month old car then it was new! insane! There was one at the garage today which was the display model, someone had bought straight away but arnt allowed it until the new display model comes in....4 months away! so thats 4 months of people test driving, and the manager driving in and out of work! Simply madness imho!

Back on topic, BMW never got back to me about test driving a z4 3 days now, which has really annoyed me..

But in the mean time i was trying to budget for one, (im looking at a 2003, 2.5si, 40k on the clock)

And i know the roadtax is around £200, fuel doesnt seem to bad 37mpg, but what are the costs for a general service at BMW etc? Are there any other costs i need to consider?

Let me know,
Many thanks,
Neo

well insurance is a killer if you are young, have pts or low ncb and petty will be more like high 20s depending on how you drive, servicing is around £250 - £300 i think but they go a long time between servicing, i have only had my 2.0 a couple of weeks but am loving it.

The si engines were introduced with the facelift in 06 so it won't be a 2.5si that you're looking at but a 2.5i which is a different engine (M52 in the 2.5i, N52 in the 2.5si) Many people on here will sing the praises of the M52 but they can be a bit heavy on oil which for the z4 is 5w30 fully synthetic and isn't cheap. Mines a bit keen on oil but having spoken to the dealer it falls way under the half a litre every thousand miles that BMW say is acceptible for the engine. Service intervals depend on how hard you drive the car, on the pre facelift cars this is worked out by the computer based on your fuel consumption the logic being that if you drive hard the car will need servicing sooner, typically 15k between services though. Service order is: oil change, inspection 1, oil change, inspection 2 then starts again. Oil changes are £130-150 ish, inspection 2 £250 ish. With it being a 2003 car you'll get cheaper services at BMW dealers as its more then 4 years old. I think i paid around £240 for my last inspection 2 before any work that it needed doing, came to £500 ish total, Brake pads, brake fluid, + a few other bits. Would've been a bit less at a good independent dealer but there isn't one near me and the service from BMW dealers is pretty good.

Tyres depend on whether you leave the runflats on, that's a seperate debate entirely, with runflats you're looking at close to £200 per corner and you'll go through a set of rears every 15-18 months, many on here have switched to Falkens which are much more reasonable but still in the order of £100 each.
