Gearknob removal?

Hi Guys,

Tried to remove gearknob today via methods discussed on here, ie second gear sit in passenger seat and pull and the riskier top down and stand astride gear knob and pull. Neither of these worked :x

Do all standard Z4 gearknobs come straight off without unscrewing? Mine's a 3.0si (56 plate). It didn't budge a mm, and I was becoming concerned I might do some damage (to the car or myself!)

mine just 'popped' off when I changed it last week. New one fits onto the slot and clicks into place. Mines a 3.0i (04 plate)
 
I certainly dont think I could have pulled any harder sat down. Maybe two hands standing up again next weekend. Very annoying as I just want the old one off, the silver surround bit is flaking on the old one presumably where the previous owners wedding ring would have been and it looks awful.
 
Give it a wiggle as you pull [so to speak]. Also, try putting it into 2nd while you kneel in the passenger seat and pull [again, so to speak].
I wouldn't worry about damaging it, should pull off without damage [....er, no - I cant say it again].
 
If its the standard knob on there it isn't held on with allen screws etc - just pushed onto the central stick. To stop it twisting the inside of the knob has a sort of male locator bar that slots into the sticks female location. Should def just pull up and off but dont punch yourself in the face, please!
 
Definitely just pulls off but mine was a real bugger. I had to stand on the seats - and try doing that in a Coupe! :cry:
 
Of course there's always a chance that the previous owner changed it for an aftermarket knob, then changed it back before selling but gluing it to secure it :?
 
On a roadster sit on the tranmission tunnel with the roof open of course and pull with it in second or fourth just watch your face.
 
You have much stronger muscles in your torso than just your arms. Bend over the knob, grasp it close to your chest and use your core muscles to yank it off.

Damn it. I really wanted to complete just one "how to remove a gear knob" thread without slipping into unwanted innuendo. :headbang:
 
Had the same issue in my 06 2.5si Roadster. Thought I was going to break something. Tried sat in the passenger seat with the car in second. My arms hurt all weekend.

Ended up putting the roof down, car in neutral, foot in each footwell and used my thigh muscles instead of my arms.....whilst gripping the knob obviously. Popped off quite easily that way.

Less danger of twatting yourself in the face with this approach as well......:-)

Took mine off today, My boss who is built like a brick out house could not budge it, and gave up as he was scared he was going to break something, But I was not for giving up, Roof down, boots off and stood on the seats, Put it into 2nd grabbed it with both hands and one good yank and it came off, I was especially pleased that I managed to do it without involving a trip to A&E with a broken jaw, Now if I can manage it anyone can, I am built like the side of a £5 note.

I kind of waggled mine off .. when in second and it came off using less force then when i tried to pull it straight up and it did nt budge .... Mr Nosa what are you fitting ? ZHP ?

OK I feel reassured to try this again now, my twiglet arms will prevail. Will re-try the roof down standing astride method..........(now where can I get a hockey goalies mask?)
