Gearknob removal e89

Hi guys.

Anybody changed their (Gear) knob recently?

I've got a V2 from Storm Motorwerks to fit but can't seem to remove the manual gearknob.

I've searched and found tons of innuendo/advice for the e85 but nothing for e89.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Steve

Just unclip the gator and pull the knob as hard as possible...i am not responsible for damage to the car or personal injury :D

sound like the way you used to get off the old E85 knobs.

1 roof down
2 straddle the tunnel
3 pull the underside of the gear knob towards you
4 keep your face well away from the angle of trajectory.

Leastwise that the old E85.

Watch your face. I ended up with a fat lip after pulling my non off. Dangerous

cjp2k, how do you unclip the gator in the e89?

In the e85 I literally just put it in second, pulled and it came away relativity easily.

The e89 seems to be a lot firmer so I'm assuming there's a clip to unfasten?

Cheers

It just pulls out..afaik its the same as the e85...

Resurrecting an old thread here, but does anyone know definitively if the gaitor is attached the gearknob in the E89?

I have a Storm V1 knob laying around that I was thinking of fitting, but if the gaitor is fixed to the standard knob I'll need a replacement first!

Put into second/fourth or sixth gear, grab with both hands and pull like heck!

Did this in my old e92, almost hit myself in the face when it finally came of. Best trying with top back, lol.

Good luck!!

I have a suspicion you may be right! I think the M knob and gaiter are attached but should be pretty easy too check.

Hi,

I asked Sytner and they stated that the knob is attached to the gaitor.

They added that they could try and cut away the gaitor but it would be a permanent fixture. Not recommended if you need to remove to sell or hand back.

Bit annoying as I'd love the storm gearknob installed in the E89. It improved changes no end in the E85.

I ripped the gear knob from the gaiter.

When selling the car, I stuck the gear knob back on from the inside with super glue.

If it's something you like and want to do, get it done :)

Sounds like a good plan

Why not see if you can buy a new non oem gaitor, wouldn't that work for you?

Have been quoted £30 plus delivery for a non-OEM gaitor in black, or £45 plus delivery if I want it colour matched to the cars interior (I have canberra beige leather), but they would need me to send them mine to use as a pattern and a sample of my leather if I want it colour matched. Both would be made from Nappa Leather.

Am considering getting it done colour matched, but not sure where I would get a sample of my leather from to send them!!

When you split the gear knob and gaitor, what was the finish on the top of the leather like? Was it a clean/tidy edge? Or did it need some tidying up?

If I remember there were some glue marks from where it was originaly mated, however the new gear knob coverd the area so all was good. :)
