Gearbox ‘Sweating’

Hi all,

BMW dealership has had my E89 Auto in two times, both times reported a ‘sweating’ gearbox (potential leak); each time they have wiped it clean and asked me to bring it back in 6 months time for a re-check;

The above times were under warranty...

even though it’s now out of warranty I am pushing the point.

The question is, should a gearbox ‘leak’ be covered under warranty (bearing in mind I purchased the vehicle from BMW originally, so it was an approved used)... the dealership say no.

Thanks for the input.

i rather think they have dodged the bullet, by letting you think they cared by saying bring it back in 6 months instead of actually fixing it they have stalled until its out of warranty, nice one stealers.
again prompting me to be convinced warranties are as much good as a chocolate teapot

That sounds like an outrageous dodge on their part.
The sump is plastic and can get damaged (or just be not perfect to start with) and they should just have whipped it all off and fitted a new kit. If it’s still doing the same now I would say you can make them do so.
BMW sell it as sealed for life, talk to any gearbox specialist or indeed ZF (think this is a ZF box) and they recommend changing the oil.
Sounds like an opportunity to whinge at a dealer and get some new oil into your gearbox.

Thanks! They actually changed the oil maybe 6 months ago, hence finding the leak again during inspection.

This is not the first disagreement I have had with them, I’m fed up with the constant back and forth. I just wanted to check with you guys that this would have been covered under warranty, as I intend to follow the complaints procedure with BMW in relation to this dealer, but want to insist that I go to a different garage for any works.
