Gearbox replaced at 17k? Unusual?

Going to see a car on Sunday. Currently on 32k (06 plate)

Had a new gearbox under warranty at 17k. Nothing claimed for in the year after that.

Is this anything to be concerned about? Seems very early for gearbox issues.

I had my gearbox replaced under warranty at circa 25k miles due to a loose input shaft. My car wasn't abused prior to that and I personally can't see a problem with the one your interested in having had a new box.

Any idea what was wrong with it? Ive seen clutches go very early, but never seen any gearboxes go.

It's important to make something very clear - the Z4M gearbox is a noisy box by design. There are many cars that are misdiagnosed as having "loose input shafts" and noisy input shaft gears. I have yet to see a Z4M gearbox that has come out, stripped down and have signs of anything other than normal wear.

Dealers get it wrong, mechanics get it wrong. Without seeing your gearbox, it is impossible to comment other than there are many box changes made without good reason.

In any case, the gearbox is an individual outsourced unit which is not related to any other component in the car. You may even have the benefit that they changed the clutch at the time for good measure.

Don't let the gearbox replacement worry you.

I agree with some of what you say but let me assure you that my gearbox was way beyond noisy by design. It sounded like it was going to fall out of the car during gear changes at motorway speeds and was like a bag of old bolts at slower speeds. Now I can't say that the diagnosis of a loose input shaft was correct but a new gearbox definitely cured the problem. You're spot on about the clutch, I paid for mine to be replaced at the same time as the gearbox change.
