gearbox problem

My 2003 3.0i automatic has a grating sound from the gearbox when applying the brake in D (and also in R). The gearbox oil was changed hoping that it might be a blocked filter. The oil that came out was black with ground up bits in. The sound is still there. Any suggestions for a good gearbox specialist in or around London?

Ground up bits of what ? was it metallic? Black oil doesn't sound good either. It may be worth looking for another box

A gearbox 'flush' may well help rather than just an oil & filter change.

A flush would clear out the metallic bits, but it would still leave the issue of where they came from.
Certainly sounds like there's a serious issue in there somewhere.
Could spend a lot of money chasing it and then still have to buy a new box.

I have booked it in with gearbox specialists, seems the sensible thing to do. Found one reasonably near me.

Entirely up to you of course, but if they offer a repair, compare it with a quote for a new box. If not much difference, maybe go new?
