Gearbox oil

Hi all,

My car is going to an indy for an Inspection II next month and I've asked them to change the gearbox oil too after reading some posts on here previously.

They use 'BMW MTF-LT2 oil'. Anyone have any thoughts on this or better alternatives as I can supply my own. I'm sure I read a post with some recommendations a while ago but can't find it now.

Also, would you recommend changing the diff oil and if so any recommendations?

Thank you for this. Interested to hear if anyone has any personal recommendations. I'm sure I saw some a while ago but can't find them now.

When my Indy put fresh oil in my 3.0Si he used BMW spec MTF LT2, but then he is ex-Sytner!

Still I had no problem with that as it's obviously to OE spec.

My ziggy 2.5 2003 is on 112,000 and is due a inspection 2 so thinking of changing gearbox and diff oil

It's going in on Tuesday for an Inspection 2 and I've asked for them to change the gearbox oil (I haven't bought any so they'll use what they use). I am debating whether to ask the diff oil to be changed. I was a tually following your post earlier and a couple of posts seemed to suggest something to consider on 100,000+miles. The mileage is on 82k so not sure whether to get it changed??

I had the gearbox and diff oil changed in my 135i when it was still fairly new and had well under 50,000 miles on the clock. The garage was shocked at how blackened it was and how much metallic residue was suspended in the oil, that they kept what they had drained out to show me. Their comment was that if the diff blew, they wanted me to know that the diff oil change had not been at cause. I opted to use BMW oil supplied by a BMW main dealer.

The gear change improved significantly too.

Thanks. Yes opted to change the diff oil too in the end as a preventative measure/maintenance after doing some research.

Yes, take the opportunity to have the Diff oil changed, you will know what is in there after. BMW will have you believe its filled for life, what they don't point out is its probably the life of the warranty they give on their cars. Changing it out on a high mileage car can only be good for it, same for the gearbox all oils will degrade over time no matter what BMW say.
