Well have gone through ATF.
Now have Fuchs titan sintofluid 75w80 in box, still notchy 1-2 gear change this past two years.
Now about to try Redline mt-lv 70w/75w.

Saw someone on YT comparing fluids of same spec but total different viscosity.
Redline does seem more watery than the Fuchs.

The notchy 1 - 2 change is really common on the manual box, my 23i had it as well.
I had Warranty Direct remove it, send it to a specialist (they rebuild exchange boxes for BMW that go on the main dealers shelf for sale) they stripped it, fully inspected it, found nothing wrong with it at all, rebuilt it and it was still notchy. Then they told me it was pretty normal and to be expected!!!!!
Don't waste your money on more oil, in fact if the 1 - 2 baulk rings are wearing fresh oil can make it worse!!!

Well done the change, jury is out at the moment seeing the ambient temperature is 3 degrees and dropping.
It's no worse, slightly better??
Yes, i even looked at pulling the box and changing the 1-2 syncros (£200), but as you say, just the design.

If your car is still fitted with a CDV you might find the 1st/2nd change improves if you remove it.

That went several years ago.
The gear change always feel better with full fuel or a passenger on board.
As though if the engine works harder it shifts better.

Well had a run with some decent temperatures of 7 degrees and got to say the gear crunch has gone.
It always felt like you had to wait for the syncro to catch up or just crunch it, just felt like it was going to chip a tooth on the syncro.
Still needs a firm pull into each gear, sporty i suppose, it seems to be designed with some strong means of holding in the gears.
Also strangely seems quieter in the cabin.
I have put up with the crunch pretty much ever since i bought the car 8 years ago.
Took almost the 2 quarts, of the 1 quart bottles.
Happy i spent the £38

The redline series seems to have mystical snake oil properties that many stateside swear by...maybe it’s true,,
