GEARBOX OIL LEAK

While the Z4 (2.0i) was up on the ramp having it's MOT done the bloke pointed out that I had an Oil leak from the seal at the rear of the gearbox where the propshaft goes in. Since then I have noticed a few drops of oil on my drive. I contacted the local dealer and they said they have never had a leak from the seal before.

My question is :? Can the seal be replaced without having to take the gearbox out, just dropping the propshaft off and hooking the seal out of it's housing and pushing a new one in or will the gearbox have to be taken out ?. One way is definitely cheaper than the other. Please help.

Have a look at the links below which shows the gearbox and various parts. It looks like the seal you are talking about is number 11 on the gearbox diagram which is referred to as 'Repair Kit - Shaft Seal'. This may (or may not!) imply that it's an item subject of wear and tear and replecement at sometime during the life of the vehicle. Looking at both illustrations - drive shaft and gearbox - I would suggest that 'dropping' the prop shaft should allow seal replacement.

If I have identified the seal properly as No 11 and it is sold as a repair kit your dealer should have a repair bulleting outlining the replacement process (and the cost.....).

Thanks for the reply Alan, I think it is item no11, so I'll give the garage the ref number and see how much it is plus fitting, Regards Trevor
