Gearbox failed to engage gear, please help!

Hi all, I have seen a few threads relating to this problem but not exactly. I have a 2004 z4 3.0, I was waiting for about 10 minutes with the engine on just ticking over out of gear, after the 10 minutes I went to drive off but I couldn't actually get it in gear, no matter how hard I tried, in any gear of that matter, I blipped the throttle a few times and after a minute of trying it eventually went in but was tight, as soon as I started driving it the box loosened up, I know the boxes in these cars don't feel great in 1st or second, (my second gear feels crunchy and slightly knocks when engaged) but it should at least go in gear, this happened again to me this morning after leaving the car to warm up and defrost the screen, I'd appreciate if someone could shed some light on this as I haven't had the cr long and it's very worrying!

Hi,

next time when you're having trouble switch off the engine and see if it goes into gear then, that will tell you if it's the clutch dragging or not, other than new thinner oil or a gearbox change(overhaul) thats about it.

I will try that next time it happens, it is strange though as on both occasions the car has been on but just ticking over, is this a common fault on these cars or am I just very unlucky?

Whilst I understand why you left it ticking over - to defrost the screen - the manual specifically says don't. It says start the engine and drive off, so perhaps it is a known problem? :o

Really ? Must have a look as I have never seen this advice before and can't think what would be bad about leaving it idling with the heaters and screen demisters on :?

it could be the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft seizing, thus causing all the shafts not to slow down and allow the synchromesh to engage.

Just a thought. The bit about stop the engine is good way of checking if all is well.

ie. if all works fine and you can feel all of the gear positions, its unlikely to be the gear change mechanism.

you should still be able to get it in gear though !!

I do recall seeing that somewhere as well. It's not that it's bad, it's just being wasteful and it puts out more emissions. Running on tick over while cold is not the greatest, but I wouldn't term it 'bad'. The engine warms up faster and is happier and cleaner running under moderate throttle instead of sitting idling and doing nothing.

Thanks for all the replies, so it did it again and I followed the advice and turned off the engine, whilst off I could engage all gears, then started the engine again and it went into hear fine, does this shed more light as to what it may be? The cat came with a aftermarket 6 month warranty so it would be nice to try and figure out what it is so I can get it fixed and not cost me anything : (

That's a tough one seeing as it went into gear after that, If you've got warranty just take it back and get them to fix it !

A mechanic should be able to diagnose that fairly quick if he had his hands on it ! it's difficult like this... on the web

Good luck
