Gearbox Chatter - Input shaft bearing

Hi there!

Have just bought a 3.0si Coupe so am new to the forum and already have my first question!

Car is lovely but it has a very loud input shaft bearing noise after the car has been driven hard. Quiet when cold, very loud when hot.

Questions:

Searching on here as taught me that a degree of noise is normal. Mine is loud in the car and very loud outside the car. What is normal / acceptable?

Has anyone had a benefit from changing the gearbox oil? Did the noise disappear or quieten?

Has anyone had a gearbox specialist change the bearing or has anyone attempted it themselves?

What other options are there?

Any advice welcome, Cheers!

Wouldnt chatter be a result of the flywheel?
Normally a bearing will create a whine, not chatter (unless its completely desintegrated)

Would have thought it was definitely input shaft bearing. Chatter might not be best description, it just sounds like a typically rough bearing. Hardly noticeable when cold, very bad when hot. If it gets bad when hot then I would have thought the most plausible reason is because its sitting in oil.

Even if its normal I dont like it at all.

The inputshaft bearing is not a known failure on the gearboxes (you would be the first one to report one I think?), but everything is possible.
This is something only you (or someone physically working on your car) can diagnose.
Are you sure its not something like the propshaft bearing?

Thanks for the reply. Its useful to know that input shaft bearing is not common. I'll undertake some further investigation and get back on here and confirm findings. Thanks

Think you will find its a character of the 3.0si buddy
All do it

Yeah sounds like 3.0si s have a release bearing character isssues haha

Yeah noise goes away when you put the clutch down.

Once warmed up it sounds horrendous with the clutch up.

Sitting at traffic lights is embarrassing.
