Gearbox and Diff Capacities

Have not been able to find a definitive answer to this: anyone have the manual box and diff capacities for a 2006 E85, preferably with a source?

Pour it n 'til it comes out of the filler hole - I put around 2 litres in my gearbox. Diff the same, pour the oil in 'til it runs out of the filler hole - took about a litre. No provenence source other than I did it myself so I know :)

These are based on a June 2006 build date so will probably be the same for all E86 3.0si's

Thanks chaps. Dewi, what's the deal with the diff drain plugs, are these able to be ordered? I've got the gearbox ones on the way but they couldn't find any for the diff.

I believe item 4 is the drain plug. Mine is leaking :-(

Mine is having a good old weep too but this is my diag: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BU52&mospid=49303&btnr=33_1142&hg=33&fg=05

I was lucky that mine were the crush washer type rather than the O' ring and I didn't see the point of renewing the plugs, they looked fine. I have a rack full of crush washers, just fitted new ones. No leaks!

They're not shown on that diagram, Steve they're at the rear of the unit. If you climb under the car you'll see them, you can't really mistake them to be honest. The drain is easy to get at, it's on the very bottom, the filler is gettable to but it's a bit of a faff.

You do know to undo the filler plug first right? Just in case it won't come undone and you you've drained the oils out by taking the drain out first - not a good position to be in. :)

Diff oil is 1.2 litres, not 1 litre.

If in doubt use the castrol website. Their oil selector is usually pretty damn good.

What's your source for that nfbr? This is the minefield I'm talking about! I don't want to be putting too little in nor do I want to be filling it 'til it overflows :headbang:

But the idea is that you do fill it until it overflows - it's designed that way

Guido posted this picture of filling the diff using an oil syringe - the filler hole is at just the right height that, assuming the car is level, you add oil until it starts to overflow out of the hole

The fill plug is located in the rear lid (and for that you'll probably an oil siringe with flexible hose to fill due to the angle), and the drain plug is located at the side.

Like this:

Draining....

The oil is 'sealed for life' (according to bmw), but refreshing the oil never hurts (as long as you use the right oil)
Refreshing oil is also a certain way to make sure that the oil level is correct. That is really important.

Which was precisely my point in my first post on this thread! :headbang:

So gearbox and diff are both over-flow fill to find the level.

Also does anyone know the torque for refitting the plugs? I've looked around a bit but there is no official torque noted anywhere.

I've bought new ones for the diff (top/bottom), I think they're the same on the diff and gearbox, so thinking to use the old ones at the top fill holes and new ones on the drain holes. Or I could just buy the gearbox ones too.

I'm interested to see what comes out after ~ 11yrs/115k miles! Both quantity and quality.

Lifetime fill my arse!

Dave

I did the gearbox this weekend but not even looked at the diff. I've certainly noticed the difference, shifts are much smoother, you can still feel the box but it's definitely better. Best £30 spent so far! Seems quieter too.

I didn't torque the plugs just did them as tight as I could... the drain took a lot of persuasion to get off and I have a few cuts and grazes to prove it

The stuff that came out was black and smelt pretty nasty, well worth a change. Does lifetime really mean lifetime or just 100/120/150k miles I wonder...
