Gear Shift Refresh

Hi all,

Has anyone done a gear shift refresh on their Ms? To me it feels bit sloppy and I have toyed with getting a short shifter but have not come across a decent one that you can install without cutting up the body work. So next best thing I was thinking is just get it refreshed. I have got in touch with James at Redish and he has comeback with a quote but just want to make sure I don't regret it if there is no noticeable improvement/difference. Curious to hear your thoughts and experience as always.

Thanks

If you haven't yet tried a ZHP or StormWerks knob, try that before spending money on the linkage as a smaller gear knob makes a massive difference.

So when I bought the car it came with this. It is much better than OEM knob, has a good weight to it as well. Not sure what make it is though. Still gearbox feels sloppy so could be wear over the years?

That knob looks considerably longer than a ZHP or StormWerks. Maybe try a StormWerks first as it has the effect of shortening the throw considerably without changing any internal parts.

Looks like mine is stormwerks v2 knob or at least it looks like it.

I am guessing you are recommending v1?

Ah yes. But presumably Storm Motorwerks would engineer the V2 so that the feel is not dissimilar to the V1? If someone else is able to testify that the V1 and V2 indeed feel similar, then perhaps you would be best served refreshing the linkage after all.

I can only attest that my shift with a V1 feels very tight with no slop and is far superior to the feel of an OEM knob.

I went with the F10 M5 illuminated manual gear knob (25112284205) to keep the stock look. I know Powerflex now do PU gear linkage bushes which might sharpen things up also.

Appreciate the feedback @plenty and @gt spec. I have the refresh booked in. Lets hope it makes a difference.

I have added a Rogue Engineering SSK & Gearbox mounts, plus Turner Motorsport LSD bushes - all made a difference.

Removing the CDV made just a tiny but not big change

Last outstanding to do on the list is the prop shaft joint

Hope you are good mate. Do you have links to the Rogue and gearbox mounts? I did the cdv as one of the first thing and it was pointless in my opinion.

Good old Roy. I have gotten few parts from him so far including re gearbox mounts. Now that you mention it I did toy around with getting the re ssk can’t recall why I didn’t pull the triggger.
