Gear Selector Rod (UUC)

Been catching up on some posts regarding notchy gear selection, engine mounts and all.
I don't have an issue with my car, however, the shifting does feel a bit plasticky and from experience slower positive shifts are better than belting fast changes.

Just wondering whether the actual shift linkages/mechanism could do with an upgrade, or call it preventative maintenence upgrade.

I was looking at the UUC Evo short shifter, but actually the car might be better improved by installing these items; rod selector:

and rod joint:

Anyone considered or tried this already? Or have seen alternative items?

Not on an m

But I have a rouge engineering short shifter fitted, it made the gear changes a lot better

Easy to fit, you can do ot all from inside

But I belive to fit the selector rod you need to get under the car and be able to reach arround the gear box and that could envolve removing the exhaust and heat shield

In theory it would improve things a bit although keep in mind that several people on Zpost have had issues with this selector rod... It fits on some cars but not on others...

Hmm, cheers ga41, will do some more reading...

No problem. Wanted to add that i'd definitely buy this (I already have their Evo3 short shift kit installed) if I was sure that it would fit OK. It's just that being shipped from the US would mean extra trouble in case of a return and I don't want to risk it...

Another aspect to consider is the engine and drivetrain flex with factory engine and transmission mounts. A number of those who have gone to more solid bushings have reported better shifting. Vibra-Technics is one of the engine mounts which seem to be highly rated. IIRC the mounts seem to primarily affect fast high rpm shifts and difficulty getting into gear.

Any where in the UK supply a short shift kit for the M? M style only have the AC version and its £££??

Thanks, had read the threads from Exdos, Beedub and others on the VT mounts, but don't know if that might be too extreme, will get existing items checked and maybe just replace with new OEM ones.

Any idea of the average life expectancy of the OEM engine mounts?

I just liked the idea behind the selector rod and metal bushing, sounds like a logical component upgrade, especially the selector rod having two pronged attachment rather than the OEM one sided one which doesn't really make sense...but will have to do bit more reading :)

EDIT: I found a current thread discussing the functionality of the heat shield on the exhaust side of the car and the effect of heat on the engine mounts. Two posts, one with 80K miles and the other with 66K miles said that their exhaust side mounts had cracked and needed replacement. IIRC the factory engine mounts are fluid flilled. Hope the info helps.

While on the topic of engine mounts, have you had your bolts checked/replaced?
