Gear knob removal

Thought i'd double check, im reading that you just pull the knob up with some force
and it comes off ? Just ordered the non smoker storage piece to replace the ashtray.

If Manual, yes, just pull it upwards. If auto, you need to put it in neutral, hold the button in, and pull.
