gear knob removal

Hi all, I know this has been covered before!! I have a new gear knob and trying to remove the old one in order to fit it. I can't believe how hard I am pulling the knob and it will not shift!! I feel I will damage something if I pull any harder.
Is there any other technique like twisting?
Any help would be appreciated, I am pretty sure it's the original on there!

Hi, it’s easier if you lower the roof & get above the gear shift which lets you pull straight upwards. Use more strength! :thumbsup:

You could get the wife to do it if you have one as she has probably had more practice!
 
Twisting wont help as there is a groove which supposedly stops it from rotating. More force is needed unfortunately. The first time I took mine off it was really solid. I found putting it in 4th really helped with the angle.

Tip, if you're pulling from sitting down don't brain yourself as it comes free.

Tip 2, if you're pulling from standing try not to clock yourself in the family jewels as it comes free.
 
Many thanks for the replies....Sijar I have been married for nearly 30 years so I guess you know that's not happening!! I am 6,1 and about 16 stone so I don't class myself as weak but I can't believe it's that hard to get off!!
 
Phew did it!! Have to agree, much better gearshift with a heavier knob!

Glad you got there in the end Steve.

You don't say what you have fitted but something heavier and shorter (I've got a ZHP) is a huge improvement over what BMW put there!
 
Mr Tidy it's the dreaded M gear knob, definitely heavier giving a much better feel! Don't think it's any shorter? But it did only cost a fiver :D :D :rofl:
