Gear knob nightmare

Am I missing something here, just ordered my new gear knob and no pins to slot into where the old one went?

There's a slat on the inside of the gear stick and this fits into a groove on the stick (the one on the car). You then twist slightly till you feel you are 'in the groove' so to speak and tap down. C'est Fini...
