Gear box !!

Long shot as I assume most of you are using yours !! But my gearbox has gone kaput so I'm after a new one for a 2.0i manual. Can get one off ebay but thought I'd have a quick look in the Zed community before committing...

hi pal I have a good 5 speed gearbox out of a 2.0 2005 car sat in my garage. Where about in the country are you.

Hi Mate, I'm in Rochdale Greater Manchester. I'm having the car towed to the garage hopefully tomorrow to tell me exactly what I will need but the gearbox has been going for a while so that's definitely on the list. Unfortunately it's a 6 Speed though, which is a shame seeing as you're Manchester way too :cry:

It started by constantly slipping out of first gear, I could get around it by using second instead but now the whole thing has gone. Thought it was just the clutch at first and ended up having to push the thing across a roundabout to get it out the way before towing it home... Been Car-less now since Monday :cry:

Sounds similar to my 3litre e89, that started jumping out of 2nd gear occasionally & quickly became worse with terrible grinding noises :o
I had a diagnosis from several experts that the syncros were broken & bmw wouldn’t sell them separately.
A replacement gearbox was £4,500 (plus fitting)
A bit shocking for a car with 19k miles!
Luckily I got a full refund as I’d only had it for a month :?

Does sound like the box is knackered. Its not as rare as people think on the N engined cars. I've seen/heard of more than a few on E9x's and even the later F3x's cars. The diffs can be problematic too. Bizarrely I've never seen/heard on any gearbox/diff failures on M engined cars (except for a few autoboxes). The general consensus in the trade is BMW didn't make them quite as well as the earlier stuff which isn't great to hear.

I think the gearbox’s aren’t made by bmw, an independent gearbox company manufactures them I believe :?

Your right its usually the like of getrag or ZF etc. Does make you wonder whos at fault, is it a watered down spec/design brief they get from BMW or is the reliability issue the fault of box manufacturer
 
I'll work it out tomorrow. Having a day off!

There's a chance you'll need a clutch and possibly DMF too, so you want me to see if I can get used?

Yes please Mike, I definitely think I need a clutch you're right so just let me know whenever you get the time. Use my whatsapp if you want.
