Gear box oil

Hello guys,

just a quick question, do i need to change my gear box oil from time to time, or every major service?

I'm driving z4 2003 2.5i
Its almost 105 miles now and never changed it before.

cheers

BMW says it's a "lifetime gearbox oil".
I say that changing it during Inspection II won't harm it, and shouldn't be too much for your wallet to support.

Anytime someone quotes "lifetime" oil, I want to cringe.

How can changing the oil, fluid ect. 'harm' the car?

If you only plan on keeping the car for short time (1-3 years) then get rid of it. Go lifetime. Then it's someone else's problem. (Not the way I would go, but to each their own)

If you plan on keeping the car for longer than that, then change the lubricants.....

80% of Zed owners on this board bought their cars USED. Think about that for a second. You bought a car HOPING someone took care of it. "head slap" :idunno:

This 'Lifetime Fill" that BMW advertises, is just to get you to the end of the 4/50 warranty. After that, you are on you own........

In an answer to the OP's question, Are you are really at 105 miles or are you really at 105,000 miles? I think your finger slipped. It happens.
If you are at 105. I would do nothing.

If you are at 105,000 miles, I would change both the gearbox and differential oil.

thanks for the replies
its 105,000 miles .. wish it was 105 only :)
yeap i agree .. i'll change both gearbox and differential oil ... thanks shipkiller ...
btw .. i love you website .. really helpful

I changed all the fluids on my 2003 3.0 SE 70k

Gearbox - Redline

Diff - Castrol

Both full syn..best money can buy etc.Gearbox was around 2ltrs odd and Diff was just over 1ltr.

And why not ? £40-50 for the oils last another 50k ? And alot better for your diff/gearbox
Well worth it.
