gas gauge only fills halfway

When I fill the tank my gas gauge only goes to the halfway point and the miles to empty shows I only have about 190 miles. The tank fills all the way and I have gone upward of 300 miles on the one tank of gas.

Any ideas what the problem is?

I would have thought the level sensor, though there are two and they both combine to provide the indication.

Seems unlikely to both have failed at the same time but then maybe one failed a while ago and the other now has. I think first step is to have codes read or use INPA to see the output.
