Garmin 1450 Problem

I recently purchased a Garmin 1450 from Amazon and I am going to return it. Here is the problem. I took it our and put in in my Zed and turned it on and it would not find the satellites. I called Garmin support and spent an hour on the phone with them to upgrade the software and then another hour on my own to download and install current maps. Why in the hell does it not ship with all the current updates??

Anyway back out to the Zed to try again and no joy. Back on the phone with Garmin tech support and they wanted me to send it to them for repair or replacement. I declined and got a return authorization from Amazon. This morning and before packing it up for return I decided to give it one more try and once again no joy. However, the second I got out of my Zed it went to a full 5 bars of satellite signal. I get back in the Zed and complete loss of signal?? The Zed is not running and nothing is turned on except the GPS which is now running on battery and no signal inside the Zed. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

I also have a Garmin 255W which works quite well and finds and hold the satellites quickly from in the cars and even in my home. I'm going to return the 1450 but need to look for another GPS with about the same specifications.

Idea anyone... :?

Sounds like a firmware issue WLH. Have you checked the Garmin forums? Might be something about it one there. My 3790T is 'sporadic' with it's connection on occasion but not quite as bad as that.

Did a quick search and also found this which might be worth trying first though.

A friend of mines garmin would never work in my z4, not sure what model though and was a year or so ago

Thanks for the comments guys...
Firmware was updated while I was on the phone with Garmin Tech support.
I was also asked to do a reset 3 times in total.
The last person I talked to at Garmin, before giving up, was thinking it was a problem with the internal antenna and therefore would need to be returned. I decided to not return it as the postage would be on me and if replaced I would get a re-furbished unit and I did not want that. I'm glad I asked that question... :smart:

When I realized that it works fine when outside the Zed that got me leaning toward thinking that the issue is something in my ///M that is causing the problem. A problem that does not happen with my Garmin 255W... :?

srhutch, interesting about your friend's Garmin not working in your Zed...
That was what I was wondering about if anyone else has ever run into this issue or knew someone else that had...
But why...that is the question but now academic as I have returned it.
