Garage won't put non-runflats on

I have a puncture on one of my rear run-flats. I thought I'd replace boh the rears with budget normal tyres for now until I had more funds; however I was just told by a local tyre chain that it's against their policy to put non-runlats on my car.

Is this common?

Very. 'Policy'... You could try somewhere like ATS Euromaster if there is one near you, but I am not sure having mixed tyres is a great idea... Not for long, anyway. If you do it, remember to gt a can of tyre goo and a compressor to carry in the car

i have heard of this however i dont think they would let you use two run flats and two normal tyres. if funds are low there is a large tyre dealer in middlesbrough who has part worns, i got one there a few years ago, it was a 18 bridgestone runflat had 5 mm of tread and cost 50 quid fitted.

I had a dealer tell me that I would have to bring a note from BMW before they would even consider changing to real tires. :police: :telloff:

Thanks. My car already had mixed tyres when I bought it. The front tyres are non-runflats.....if I'd have known this was against BMW's spec I would have mentioned it at the time of purchase

Have found one place local who says they'll try and repair it.

I think most of the places that refuse are expensive so they will have, by their idiocy, saved you a few bob.

Some of the bigger tyre chains wont put non run flats on a zed. However, there are numerous mobile tyre fitters that will. Might be worth contacting a few, or trying a specialist tyre fitter?

I hate company 'policy'... blah blah :headbang:

The 'policy' in question is probably so that they can sell you a more expensive run-flat tyre.

If you have non RFts on the front already it is idiocy them telling you to mix tyres. Call event tyres or try some other places that aren't large chains. And get some goo :D

Cassie-UK, If funds are low try blackcircles.com get them on HP reasonable rates.

Yer average tyre fitter has the IQ of a door stop. WTF do they know about it?

Next time ask for management and a clear explanation of their thinking (which is probably "we want you to spend 50% more on RFTs mate!").

Deka- I would never ever fit a part worn tyre. You simply have no idea if it's life. Reality is most of them come from crashed cars and find their way to market. Often German as they have higher standards and can't sell them.
Internal cords or structure could be damaged and the tyre fail suddenly. They are not subject to any testing.
I understand people doing this on little cheap city runabouts, but not performance cars.

Wow, you guys are great! I found a local place with a slightly used run-flat tyre for £35 installed. It's not ideal, but if it'll last long enough until I can replace all four ill be happy. It certainly got me out of a bind today.

Thanks for all your input everyone :)

I run non/Rft's on th rear & Rft's on the front as they still have 5mm left on my 335d ! You wont have any problems whatsoever as long a they are on the same axiel & you have some tyre foam & compressor.

Eastern BMW in Newbridge wouldn't fit any customer supplied tyres at all, Peter Vardy in Edinburgh were fine, though they reminded me that the new tyres were non-runflat but forgot to reset the run-flat indicator themselves!

Same policy as Stephen James BMW in Enfield.
Wouldn't let me use my own oil for the Oil Service either. :headbang:
