15mm fire retardant board is the fire reg to my knowledge - only applicable for garages attached to the house.markeg said:spearman said:The project is underway....
1) crap cleared out - check
Ok, it's only one bit, but it's a start.
I'm going to be ordering the plasterboard and lighting in the next few weeks. I wondered if anyone knew if I need special plasterboard? I'm pretty sure the bog standard stuff is fine, and I'll give it a coat of unibond to seal it, but I'm not 100%. it's a seperate building to the house.
Going for the 8ft by 4ft sheets £5 each from wickes![]()
Just need to find some lights...

I believe any plasterboard has to be double-skimmed (two layers of plasterboard) for a garage (fire regulations). That may only refer if the garage is built attached to the house though. Only know that as I'm getting a new garage built shortly (double garage for the zed and tools only) - sacrificed the old one for a media room and office last year.....
In both our (single) garages we have a single incandescent bulb as well as fluorescents. Gives some instant light when you first flick the switch, and while you're waiting for the fluorescents to flicker into life ...spearman said:2) install new lighting (8 x 6ft twin fluorescents)
going for the big dug storage/shelving/bench across the entire back of the garage. Side to side custom installed. Plastic boxes for all my plumbing/electrics (plus other stuff) tools and equipment etc on one side, then a fairly shallow but high bench across the other side. There's going to be shelves under the bench, and I MAY get a snapon unit to fit snug underneath.cj10jeeper said:Tool chest fom Costco. I have a monster 5' high 15 drawers. All stainless steel and looks the business.
Add bench with vice. Air compressor and extendable hose, assorted air tools, etc.
Think how many power sockets is reasonable then double it. I have at least 8.
4 sets o lights.
That's my starters list.
nice one JDMJDM said:Standard plasterboard will be fine.12.5mm. You only need to double board if there is habitable rooms above for ire regulations..
That's the architect in me coming out.. On a Sunday!!! I charge double rate you know!!![]()

I think I'm going to go with an epoxy resin. My garage is 40sq metres, and it should work out about £150 ish. But then there's prep work. Your floor cant have any moisture or it peels and you could end up with a horror storey. I should be ok with an epoxy as the floor is on piles and damp proofed. If I go down the epoxy route I'll hire a scarifier so it roughs up the surface to make the epoxy bond well. The floor will have a major impact on the overall look, so not too concerned with cost as long as it not stupid. So far ive spent £80 on plasterboard, £80 for the electrician and £150 on lights. I've got a budget of £500 so I think it's going wellJaEdBa said:i'll be interested in what you do for your floor...i wanted black and white tiles, chess board style, but everything worked out so pricey for a reasonably sized garage...in the end i went for some floor paint, still haven't got round to doing it yet.
i kind of figured tool boxes, work benches etc are all paid for out of the difference i saved. and it's only a floor, didn't want to get to the point where i was wiping my feet on entry...![]()
