Garage visit !!

One simple diagnostics check, one fat list of advisories.

The garage has written up a list of all the parts they recommend being changed and the cost to do so.

I’d greatly appreciate any advice or tips.
Do you think this price is reasonable or am I being ripped of.

The total cost is £1431
£581 labour
£611 parts
£238 vat

I’m reaching deep into my pockets for this one as I’m a student 😟.

Many thanks
Will

Is that at an Indy by any chance or at BMW?

Suspension costs look very high. You can replace all 4 shockers and springs for that price.

Looking a bushes costs etc. it all seems quite expensive.

front shocks £721????
2 hours to replace back box rubber mounts????

Maybe I'm mis-reading this somehow?

The more I read it the more it looks wrong!

You can get the Bilstein B12 Pro-Kit Suspension Kit With Bilstein B8 Shock Absorbers for front and read for £820!

Sub total labour for the rubber mounts is £13 unless Im reading it wrong.

Labour to replace rocker cover gasket £146.25... :o :o :o !!!!!!!!!!! That’s a 20 min job at best..!!

Run...run away very very quickly OP.....

yeah there's a typo in one of those columns. I'd guess they mean £130 since they've stated the labour as 2 items @ £65

I think it says .2 for labour so the cost of £13 is correct. I agree with everyone though, the front damper cost seems very high (although I've never rang BMW for a price and this maybe the cost from them).

Good luck getting it sorted.

I agree with the above, does seem a bit pricey, particular the suspension stuff. I paid circa £300 for all 4 shockers, these were good quality Bistein B4's just over a year ago. They want more than that for just the front two. The rear wishbone bushes seem pricey too, you can buy Meyle HD bushes pre-fitted in the holders (lollipops as they're commonly know) for sub £50 on Ebay. As they're already in the mountings once the car is on a ramp its about half an hour of a job to fit both as they're only secured by two easily accessible bolts per side once the car is on a ramp. This place is charging the same for two bare bushes that then require your old ones removing and pressing the new ones in, hence the high labour. Buying the pre fitted ones on Ebay should mean you have change from £100 fitted.
The rear exhaust mount and the rocket cover gasket are pretty straight forward (certainly doesn't take 2 hours) if you want to have a go at them yourself at home you could save a bit of money and sourcing the parts should be cheaper if you do it yourself too. The gearbox stuff is best left to a garage or at least use of a ramp etc

its 0.2 hours on the backbox :D

OP is this a main stealer or an indie. Daft as it sounds but the labour rate looks very low for a BMW main dealer @£65 p/h. but the part prices seem main dealer. If it's an indie did they not suggest aftermarket/ non main dealer sourced bits

Told ye I was misreading it :)

It looks like they’ve got prices from your local dealer for parts, and probably added a mark up on the parts too. Unfortunately I doubt many customers look at the cost of parts themselves before going ahead.

Id be looking elsewhere personally. It’s pretty clear that nobody’s double checked that quote before it was given to you, there’s no excuse it’s just careless. If they can’t get a couple of pages of A4 right then I wouldn’t want them aiming spanners near my car.

Its an Indy garage, the lady I spoke to suggested that all the parts they buy are aftermarket, however she was struggling to source the shocks cheaper than BMW OEM parts.

Its hard as I dont want to be driving around a car with all these problems, however i dont want to get ripped off

Bare in mind they are advisories not fails. Quote looks over the top to these eyes too. Take the car elsewhere and get another quote for the same work. You can always come back to the original quote, if the second is more. You could also consider getting some of the work done now and some later when finances fit better.

I bought 2 front shocks from Amazon. OE Sachs at £90 a side.

Can't see them on there anymore but...

See my knowledge on suspension is very limited and im worried I will end up with the wrong shocks. I had the rear springs changed today as both springs where cracked eeek. But know I feel i need the right front shocks so the car rides properly

You should replace both left and right shocks.

Put the reg into Carparts4less and it'll bring up shockers. Phone them to confirm it's for the SI suspension.

Sachs Shocks for mine...

Front Left £107.61
Front Right £107.61
Rear £68.18 each

Front Springs £55.16 each
Rear Springs £91.32 each

Both front wishbones and lollipops.... £89
SUSPENSION TRACK CONTROL ARMS WISHBONE LOWER
FRONT FULL KIT FOR BMW 3 SERIES E46 & BMW Z4
