I want to replace my up & over garage doors with electric roller doors - does anybody have any advice they could offer me please ?
The garages have currently got two single (standard width) Henderson steel doors - unfortunately I cannot change the layout to a full width door for the garages.
 
I changed mine is it a detached garage ,if so it only needs a girder fitting done 2 where I live.
I had a Norwich firm do mine and have recommend to lots of others you can fit yourself or they do it very efficient, :thumbsup:
 
Cant comment on roller doors but we have an electric sectional door and its great.
No more fighting with a frozen lock or having to get out the car in the rain to open the door.
 
I have the up and over electric double garage door, seemed a bit pointless at first (was already installed when I bought the house) but a great labour saver like dishwashers and TV remotes! You wonder how you got along without them.

Recently had my drive gates converted to electric, absolute bliss to drive in from the road and all the way into the garage without getting out of the car.

Ronk, as per shortfuse's comments earlier, are you sure you cant convert two singles into one double?, we did this a few years ago as our two single doors had two catnic RSJ's supported by a central pier & we didn't think so either, we had a builder come in he ordered us a custom made RSJ & built up the two remaining outer piers to suit the width of the new door (these days they cut the door to match the width of the opening).

We've never looked back, a single large opening door is so much more useable than two singles, just imagine parking your Zed in the middle & being able to work all around it :wink: , plus your going to need two lifters in your scenario.

Our door is sectional door made by Hormann, touch wood neither the lifter or door has given us a single issue in 16 years.

We replaced our up and over steel doors with remote roller shutters and it's one of the best things ever.
Costs varied considerably, the national advertised ones being almost double what I paid, around £900 six years ago using a local company.
They still look as good as new and only one failure when one of the manual switches failed.
Seem to recall that the insulation of the doors can vary between different types, maybe something to check.
Installation done comfortably in a day for both.. You won't regret it.

I would like to go for one full width door but I don't think it would be cost effective. The double garage I have is partly under the gable end of the house so the house is supported on a structural pillar in the garage. I might be able to remove that but it would be a really massive job - I don't think Mrs K would thank me!

I think it will have to remain as two doors unfortunately.

The up & over doors have closing strips on the framework which reduces the opening even more :thumbsdown:
This is another reason to do the mods !

That shows me a similar installation to my garage opening - it shows me that I can remove the existing wooden framework. :thumbsup:
It will effectively give me an increased entrance width of about 100 /150mm :thumbsup:

I couldn't be happier with mine plus frees up the roof space for a hardtop winch :D
