Garage and house alarm question

...bit of a #firstworldproblem I know....but here goes.....!

In our house we have our Scantronic 9853EN alarm panel in the hallway as you enter the house. This is all fine if you are on foot and need to dis-arm the alarm after opening the front door.

The issue which I am looking for feedback on here is how your setups are configured to handle the scenario where you arrive home, press the button to open up your garage door (or open it manually), drive in AND THEN want to dis-arm your alarm.

Our garage, whilst connected to our home, is on the other side of the house. Also, the current setup means that when we want to go out in the car AND set the alarm, its a messy process whereby we have to take the car out of the garage 1st, close the garage door then walk back through the house, then exit from the main door after setting the alarm. We are strict "no shoes in house" people also - so this adds to the hassle....

So what have you guys got setup and what options do you think I have?

Some ideas....

1. Adding some sort of remote fob to set/unset the alarm (like a car alarm) - but then you wont get the "chirp" to say when it armed/disarmed

2. Altering the "grace" time when setting/un-setting the alarm before its active - to allow for the aforementioned process - BUT this is counter productive SHOULD somebody break in (god forbid!) as would allow them longer to do their stuff and be off without the alarm sounding.

3. Install a 2nd panel in the garage

4. Live with it!

Cheers
Jamie

You can set the garage zone as an E/E ie exit/entry with an appropriate delay, so it won't trigger the alarm until after that delay, giving you time to disarm at the main panel. That's the way I have mine.

This way, if you are at home and the garage is compromised whilst the alarm is set, at night for instance, whilst you will not get an instant alarm until expiry of the delay, you WILL get the exit/entry sounder that you get when entering the house, so will aware of it.

I suppose it depends on the alarm system that you have but, when we arm/disarm ours using the remote keyfob, the external alarm sirens emit a (lower-volume) 'chirp' as confirmation

I used to do this for a living !

If you fit a relay to the Door opener it will shunt the zone shut whenever the motor is in operation, yet will still alarm if the door is forced opened without using the remote/motor

My door opener triggers a light on the motor unit that stays on for 3 minutes after the door opens/closes. The relay triggers as soon as the motor kicks in and also shunts the alarm circuit closed, even though the door contact is opening. This gives you 3 minutes to drive in, park exit the car and then disarm the Alarm, using a keypad in the garage (or house).

I can draw you a wiring diagram later if you're proficient and it helps ?

Sounds like a better way than mine is set up, I'd be up for a peek at that diagram!

I've drawn it out but it's on the PC at work and i forgot to post it before I left I'll see if I can remotely log in and send it home !

Wow - lots of response, such a knowledgeable and helpful forum as always. The relay option sounds technical to get working, unless it's plug and pray?

If I wanted to add a 2nd keypad in my garage, will I need to wire this back into the main control box (which is again, inside the house in the shoe cupboard) ? Or can I spur off the movement sensor which is in the garage?

Can you retrofit keyfob activation to my Scantronic alarm? I googled but didn't find much!!

1. No - You need to wire it back to the Control Panel. The PIR will be running on an open/close Circuit wire, whilst the keypad will be running on a data wire.

2) No. The later Scantonic panels like the 9651, 9751, etc can use a Prox Fob, but not a remote blipper.

The Visonic Wireless systems now come with a blipper, but not the Scantronics as far as I'm aware, ( However, I came out of the alarm install game 5 years ago when I started looking after Security on the Bridges.)

When entering through the garage, if with someone else in the car, I send them in through the garage to the second alarm panel to disarm or park on the drive and disarm myself through the garage before parking up..
