Gaptech

So after following Geogio's brilliant post about sorting the roof motor problem out;

I thought i would treat the zed to a gaptech;

Looking forward to fitting this small but handy mod.

Brilliant little mod, always makes me smile when I'm walking to the car as the roof is dropping.
Which one have you ordered, RCM or the RCM+?

They are great little mods. I didn't really want one but bought it on a whim during the group buy and love it!

Reminds me of buying my first ipod mod - you don't realise how much you will love it and use it until you have one!

hmm - just tried fitting mine today (rch+) but no joy - does not work. Very disappointed.

Checked all the connections to make sure the leads from the module are connected to the wiring loom using a multimeter - good circuit. Followed the instructions very carefully too, all correct wires matched up.

Can only think either the module is duff (but they test them before sending them out)) or a wire in one of the the press clip splicing brackets supplied moves between me checking the circuit and then moving and pressing buttons.

2 hours later and have just reassembled it all so back to square one. Will try again another time and do different splices perhaps. The supplied press clip plastic brackets don't look fool proof.

Anyone else had problems with this thing ? Did you use the supplied clips or some other technique to splice the wires, if so what ? its a bit cramped to be doing soldering in there.

I take it you are using scotch lock connectors? Mine also did not work straight away, I went back to each clip and gave them an extra squeeze with pliers so they fully snapped in. Not had a problem since, and it's been on for around 8 months

i've never liked scotch lock connectors, even if they work when first connected in time they will fail

A much better way of fitting is to strip a small section of the sheathing, wrap the gaptech wires around and then solder. Just go slow and be delicate (I used a stanley knife to strip back the wires)

having removed the ashtray in mine, there does not look to be a lot of space underneath if for the gaptech :?

Indeed. It's very cramped there and difficult to work - even with the scotch blocks.

the solder methods looks a good idea. I mean- a hot poker next to all that plastic - what's the worse that could happen :)

Just remember the golden rule.....let the soldering iron hit your hand before you let it go near then interior plastics!! :rofl: and lay down a load of towels/rags around the centre console

There is room and it's a nice simple install. The key really is not to rush, just be carefull to only remove the insulation and not cut into the existing wires.

yeah :D

i have an auto so it is just bit tricky as i can't move the gear stick.

My car looks the same with it fitted... :poke:

you numpty lol, any body got a pic of the gaptech in situ before the ashtray is put back, there's just no space for it :?

Very simple to install, much easier than the eOpen I had before that was a hang under the glove box trick.

Loads of space indeed. Remember to use a gas soldering iron and not an electric one.
