The pump increases the pressure differential on the intake manifold so that the engine 'sucks' in more air (oxygen) for the cold start combustion. More fuel needs more air. After a little while it switches off automatically. Hope that explains it :)

What worries me is WHY its blowing the fuse!! Glad you isolated it though mate :D

Cheers EdButler, got it, but oh for the days of the enrichment jet and a choke flap :)
 
(although I thought that the pump was in the water circuit myself - and that it worked to circulate the water even though the thermostat was closed at cold start, to somehow result in lower emissions - but I might be wrong!)
 
I seem to recall that this did happen to me once. Come to find out, when I pulled off the instrument cluster to clean it, I didn't plug it back in correctly. I got that fixed and had no more problems. 8)
