Now i got help but im still confused...i know if the green plug has a wire in ports 9 and 10 then my car is set up for plug and play which i cant understand how that would be...and as to where the plug for the MFSW buttons goes, cos the green and white plug go into the back of the air bag then those leads join into one and plug into a furter lead so where does the MFSW plug go, f**k im lost and i dont want to spend £171 on a new MFSW kit form BMWMINIPARTS plus the already spent £60 on carbon fibre covers plus the £145 on new retrimmed wheel only to take old wheel off and not know what im doin as im a utter monkey when it comes to wiring!!!
HELP!?!?!?!?

Check ya PM's :)

The MFSW control plug plugs into a spare slot in the steering ring (u can't miss it once the air bag is removed!) :)

That's assuming your mfsw buttons have got their mini loom with them. Can you post up a pic of what you've got?

The left hand buttons cable run over the the right hand buttons, then that has a cable that plugs into the slip ring along with the airbag cable - through that hole top centre.

Look at the slip ring, not the steering wheel. You will see 3 sockets. The left and centre are already in use by airbag, horn, etc. the rhs is where the MFSW connected plugs In.

It should have 2 pins visible. If not you need the later generation slip ring win the pins. Early slip rings except SMG were blank

Hope that helps

I think you have the old style slip ring with missing pins
Should look like this with pins in all 3 'sockets'

You'll then need the loom from the ream of the slip ring too

Jonny,

I might be confusing you somewhat here. I actually did the mod over 6 years ago and haven't revisited it much since.

On reflection the extra pins were probably for the paddles, not MFSW. Here's my original write up on fitting the MFSW, which I also did with paddles.

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3111&p=44699&hilit=http%3A%2F%2Fi200.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa256%2Fcj10jeeper%2FMFSW%2FDSCN2200.jpg#p44699

The slipring has extra pins as CJ points out. Some sliprings don't have these pins - you need to be careful if sourcing a slipring that it has these connections. I had to replace mine when the connection broke. Mine doesn't have paddles.

I always thought <sept04 had all the wiring looms, after that date you get screwed for extra parts!

Mine's an aug 04 build and had wiring for cruise and MFSW controls

FFS my zed is built May 2005 so how can it not have the pins, f***ing modding is doing my head in lol
So what do i need to do fella?

All this hassle with a steering wheel change.... think what hassle an engine, gearbox, axle transplant will be. (not sure if you saw my previous posts).
All the tiny changes throughout the years. Putting a different size, model year engine in model changed body....Pandora's box waiting to be opened!

Wish I could be of help mate :( I have an MFSW in mine which the previous owner put in. Never had it off to see what goes we though.

As I've since said you probably don't need the slip ring for just the MFSW retrofit.

Jonny have you read the retrofit instructions and checked the wires are in place from column to loom behind the dash?

I havnt checked, so if there is no loom behind dash it cant be done?
Im very confused, i thought you needed the pins in the slip ring and if u didnt you had to splice the wires from behind the dash?

I've PM'd you.
Send me an email address and I'll send you the BMW retrofit instructions. No need to buy a slip ring - as I said before I corrected myself as the slip ring is only for the paddle shifts.

CJ - when my slip ring failed, I found there were two types available - one with the additional pins and one without. I don't have the paddles but needed the other pins for my MFSW controls? The other slip ring did not work...?

I've sent the full retrofit instructions to Jonny so he can go figure what he needs. In it there is no mention of slip ring changes for pre or post '03. There is either a loom into 2 pins on the back of the existing slip ring, or you need to add it.

As it happened I changed slip ring to the later design as I needed it for the paddle shifts which I did at the same time as MFSW.

In terms of slip ring changes you're spot on. Early ones except for the SMG did not have the extra pins, but later did. BMW now only sell the version with extra pins, presumably to rationalise stock parts and in any event all later autos had paddles so needed the extra pins..

I've got a slip ring to sell too. I'll look and see what pins it has...

I think you are the first one to understand my username!
I'll try and find it in a bit, from what I've read I still don't know if you need it but I'll find it anyway.
