Your ex colleague of 23 years ago won't to know whether you are there or not. The only person you could possibly upset is the girl who invited you.
In the circumstances I'm not even sure I would contemplate sending a donation but maybe that's just the Yorkshire in me.
If I was in your shoes I would not be going.

Thanks Terry, its not really the invitation itself as you said correctly I had pretty made my mind up anyways but still feel guilty, its more people can be quite off with you when you don't attend when I think attending a funeral is quite a personal thing/decision. I think its different to say a wedding invitation. I was interested to hear peoples views on if you declined an invitation and then got berated on your decision which where funerals are concerned I feel would be wrong.
Just my take on it.
