Apologies to drag up a thread that has done before - if anyone can point me in the direction of the original thread, please do as I couldn't find it 
Anyway... I've been trying different fuels over the last few weeks and found the following which I thought was worth sharing!
Esso Super (97): 27-28 mpg @ 140.9p/l
BP Ultimate (97): 27-28 mpg @ 149.9p/l
Shell V-Power (99): 30-31 mpg @ 149.9p/l
Tesco Momentum (99): 27-28 mpg @ 137.9p/l (this is after the fuel price jumped down a lot).
The mpg figures are for a ~44 mile round commute across bog standard A roads with light traffic; 2-3 runs of the commute for each of the fuels.
The V-Power was noticeably smoother both sounding and driving than all 3 other fuels, definitely not just placebo. I've never seen over 30 mpg with Esso, BP or Tesco but it kept creeping over 30 with V-Power and even made 31.3mpg over one of the days commute.
After moving to Momentum the engine felt a little like starting on a cold winter morning but on a mild summer morning - very odd! I can't say I noticed the cold start feel on Esso or BP, but then I may not have noticed before trying V-Power. I will take note in future.
Time to get one of those V-Power cards, I am surprised at how much difference it makes
I've never tried 95 with it to compare.
As a side note; my Clio 200 would do the trip in ~28 mpg with normal 95 fuel so the BMW has very good fuel consumption for its performance!

Shell V power all the way in my Z, makes a noticeable difference to the smoothness of the engine.

I use whichever SuperUnleaded is available when I need to fill up.
The weather/traffic seems to make more difference on my 220 mile commute than the brand of fuel.
Sometimes get 27mpg, sometimes get 32mpg, for the same run. I'll bet that one extra traffic light stop on a 44 mile commute could reduce your MPG by 1mpg.

Just found this interesting read where it tests Tesco 99, Shell V Power and BP Ultimate. The Tesco 99 came out top in the review, slightly beating the Shell. While it doesnt compare all super unleaded fuels (e.g. Texaco, Esso) it does give a bit of an insight into how the engine benefits from higher octane fuels etc.
