what is the reason for running a 2.5 engine on the more expensive higher grade fuel and does it really make a difference?

You won’t get any more power on a naturally aspirated engine but the detergents will clean the internals of the engine :)

You won't notice any differece in performance. Any differences you think you notice are purely placebo! 8)
We ran an Atom at the 'ring with a 4 pot n/a engine tuned for 100 octane and i can confirm that the gains were purely marginal! What we lacked in top end and accelleration we made up for in the bends and twisty bits however   wasteofmoney.com

My S2000 did not feel any different but it gave an extra 2-3 mpg on 98 octane
Lots of the guy's on the S2000 forum will confirm the same so there is some benefit on some cars

Turbo cars definitely benefit, especially if mapped to super unleaded. The Impreza/evo tuning boys recommend Tesco 99 or Shell V Power, the rest are cack. Most supermarket fuel is 95 ron nowadays so there's not much to it, unless you're mapped to a specific fuel, then it's important to run the right stuff

I have the normal 2.3. I notice the engine seems to accelerate more aggressively with the higher octane and the exhaust will pop more.
But with standard fuel the acceleration is quieter and smoother and rarely pops. Depends on brand. If i go standard i seem to prefer a good brand like Shell, just seems better than the local supermarket stuff.

Don't know if the higher is causing the ignition timing or mixture to change via the knock sensors, resulting in the popping exhaust.
Just doesn't pop with standard fuel.

I have been putting in standard and super every so often, but I didn't notice any difference either. A mechanic mate of mine said to put super in every so often for cleaning

The knock sensor is there to protect the engine. It won’t advance the timing to make the most of higher octane fuel. It will retard it if you have bad fuel though.

My MX5 used to be supercharged and I had it mapped on 95 fuel. That way I didn’t have to worry about trying to find high octane fuel when in the wilds of Scotland/Wales/Berkshire plus I could use some high octane stuff to give a bit of extra headroom when it was being thrashed on track.

My engine warning light usually comes on after a few hundred miles when I use supermarket lower grade fuel. Never does when I use super unleaded.

Clean the inside of your tail pipe and fill the tank with higher octane fuel. There may be no discernible difference in performance but you will notice how the exhaust remains pretty free from carbon deposits. Check the Telegraph website and see what Honest John writes. Then make your mind up.

That's because low grade supermarket fuel contains 5% biethanol, some cars don't like it, it messes with the lambda sensor

Which is exactly the code that comes up! Fill it up with better fuel, clear the code and it is fine!

I’m sure it would be fine with main brand standard fuels.
My diesel Merc never liked Sainsbury/Asda diesel. They made it sound like a bag of spanner’s. Tesco and all the main brands were fine.

Berkshire.. Oh the risk some people will take with their Zeds.

Oi you lot. :rcard:

I live in Berkshire and it isn't difficult to find Super - I've got a Tesco and a Shell within a mile and a half of my house! :P

I've had the amber EML on mine a couple of times for cat faults (Codes P0420 and P0430 IIRC). Codes reset, a dose of Cataclean and Super fuel only as recommended by my local BMW indy - ideally Shell Super as he says it seem to have more cleaning additives than any other Super. (He found out when he was racing 2-stroke carts - it seemed to "wash" out the 2-stroke oil, so wasn't ideal for use in them)!

Still EML resting for now, so Super fuel it is and fingers crossed!

My wifes Peugeot did the same thing, engine light would come on if supermarket petrol used.
The supermarket fuel with biethanol doesn't burn as cleanly, the MOT emissions tests will show it up as well.

If you go abroad be careful not to use the 10% bio crap 95 E10, that can do some damage, apparently its quite corrosive so you must not use it in older cars.

I'll try the standard main brand fuels next time then, see what happens. Super unleaded is getting expensive!

My diesel Santa Fe also smokes on startup with cheap supermarket fuel in, as well as sounding terrible.
