54 3.0 manual

Smell of fuel in the cabin on startup

Changed/checked

Fuel line between metal line and fuel rail
Injectors (but still not convinced that Cyl 1/2 o rings looked a bit iffy
Fuel cap seal in good order

Where else would you guys recommend looking?

Anywhere around the DISA/intake?
Intake control

Stuart

You seem to have checked the obvious points, if you have any doubts about any of the injector O rings then renew them all, if one is failing the others won't be far behind. Shouldn't think the Disa or inlet would be the source but do check their joints for any signs of leaks. A smoke test may well be worth doing as this will almost certainly find any air leaks you cannot find visually.

Carbon canister?
What’s that!?

I think only Ms and Alpinas have one. IIRC it's an extra bit of emissions equipment.

Just found a thread about it here:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1869261&hilit=bracket#p1869261

Is the smell only on start up?

Yep

Is it possible then it could be something to do with the engine turning over and starter motor or ignition system or spark plugs? It's just weird that it happens on start up only; a leak you would expect to happen all the time. I think you will have trouble finding it if it's just on start up as it's not a consistent issue if you know what I mean. Is it possible not all the fuel is being burnt off on startup and leaking somehow? But once the engine is running it's fine? It could be a heat issue (cold engine or more likely a cold pipe) that once warm expands and seals the leak.

Injectors - you have checked but if you think they could do with a refresh then probably worth doing for peace of mind.

Can’t see starter being an issue

I can see leakage if the o rings are waning which may burn off/dissipate quicker when the engine is hot

Hi, bigwinn,

Did you ever solve this issue?

I have a strong fuel smell on startup and since having the car it always revs high on initial cold start but settles to a nice idle, have changed and or checked most things on the car except the fuel injectors, just bought an injector kit and hoping that might solve my issue, anybody done the injectors on an m54?
