Fuel Pump?

I'll try and get a video of mine, it's loud enough that people stare at my car when they walk past and I'm in a traffic jam (sadly they are not admiring the car, the noise can be heard from about 10 foot away)

Since the new pump was fitted its even louder on mine, it's going back in tomorrow.

When it's in the garage the echo is so loud that its actually louder than the engine!
 
Mine is going in for investigation on Friday. Posted a while back with an example of the noise. Is this what you're getting?

Mines back in today and sytner have located a fault with the fuel filter - lets see if this solves it! I would have just lived with it but it came back the first time even louder.
 
After fitting the pump which still made the noise, they swapped the fuel filter and it still made the noise, so my dealer wrote to BMW who have said there is a revised pump for the z4s now which don't make the noise - so this is being fitted on Tuesday :D
 
Good news that you have a proper fix :D . Mine went in yesterday and I've been told that some parts need to be ordered and then they'll want the car for 2 days. I was told it was "to do with the fuel system." I'll ask specifically what's going to be done when I take it in...

There's a technical bulletin about the pumps, so if your dealer follows this you should get a replacement revised pump fitted. It's a very big job, would cost £1300 without a warranty.

£1300?! Sheesh.
 
I've got the car back from bmw this morning - perfect with no whining noise! The proper fix seems to be a revised pump - a technical bulletin with the dealers is recommending this rather than replacing the pump like for like (which is what they did with mine first time round).

One very happy z4 owner!
 
Have this whining noise on my new 35i only usually when it is warmed up especially after a long run only hear it when ticking over did not on happen on my 60plate 23i a bit annoying :( as is the rattle from the plastic bit under the radio which disappears when you push it hard anyone else had this one? will get it back to the dealers at some point. :(

Yeah I get an engine whine after a long run. Not sure if its the turbos or some belt somewhere. Mine rises and falls with engine revs.
 
Mine makes no difference when I rev it Maniac and can't hear it when I lift the bonnet anybody else had the rattle from the bit of plastic located under the radio,incidently finished the running in period yesterday and floored it a couple of times :D :D :D :D NICE :thumbsup:
 
The heads-up on the revised fuel pump from Transmat was timely. Took mine in today to have the work done and asked exactly which part was scheduled to be replaced. It was the fuel pump and the one they had ordered in was a straight replacement. I asked about the revised one and the guy knew all about it as he has one on order for another customer. I had a choice - have the like-for-like replacement or wait for the revised part to come in. Before I could answer, his advice was to wait.

So I'm now waiting...

Deffo go for the revised one, mine has been prefect since and it's like driving a new car again :) it didn't take long for the dealer to get the new pump, 3 days I think. It's worth the wait.

Is it a BMW dealer doing yours?

Yep - main dealer as my car is under warranty. I've just been reading a separate thread about warranty extension and as mine is due up in 4 months I'm starting to get interested. The Dealer warned me that the other customer has already been waiting a week for their revised pump so it might take a while.

It's definitely sensitive to how much fuel is in the tank. For the last few trips it's been completely silent and so on the way to the dealer today I filled the tank right up and as soon as I pulled out of the station it was whining away like a good 'un!

That's exactly the same as mine - noise disappeared when under half a tank.

The dealer (understandably) said that when I took the car in for the original replacement pump (like for like) to run the tank empty so that they didn't waste any fuel as they couldn't store it. When they put the pump in it was obviously quiet (as tank was near empty) so they assumed fixed, but then the noise reappeared as soon as I filled up.

It's advisable to take the car in with a full tank, so that they can test the car again on a full tank when they put in the new pump, this will ensure they can be confident it is cured.

The plus point with my fix (under extended warranty) was that I also had a new fuel regulator / filter and full system clean as part of the diagnostic stage :)
 
Can I ask whether you have a BMW warranty or a 3rd party one? If BMW, would you mind telling me what you paid? As mentioned, mine will be up soon and I need to suss out what I'm going to have to pay. Also, it would be interesting to know whether BMW are open to a bit of haggling... :)

I have the BMW insured warranty. I have a 10 plate sdrive30i auto with 35k miles, and took comprehensive without emergency service and a £100 excess for £360 per year. The emergency service just bumps the price up by £80, which I found out was a waste anyway as you already get roadside recovery (tow to garage) included with the comprehensive cover, the only difference with emergency service is you have the option of being towed home. I didn't try to haggle, but was under the impression it's a fixed price. For the price it's a complete no brainer. My last car was a Porsche cayman and they wanted £890 a year when it only had 6k miles on the clock, so the bmw cover seems relatively cheap!
 
Thanks for the info, Transmat :) . That's not as much as I thought it would be and I reckon my mileage will be around 20k by the time I need the warranty. While we shouldn't need to have as much warranty work done as some of us have had to, on the plus side the dealers seem to crack on with it without quibbling. At least, that seems to be the case...

Yes the process is definely much more straight forward than a 3rd party warranty. It's pretty clear what is and isn't covered by the bmw warranty in their terms, and it's just like an extension of the manufacturer warranty, book it into a main dealer and you don't have to do anything other than pay the excess, no forms or hassle. A 3rd party needs approvals etc, I've not had any issues with the work done via bmw, seems a very reliable and trustworthy set up.
